Groot Is Returning To His Homeworld Planet X In The MCU Teases Vin Diesel

According to Vin Diesel, Groot will be returning to his homeworld of Planet X in Phase 4 of the MCU. The beloved member of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has long been an enigma to audiences, especially those who have not read the comics. Now fans might finally be able to piece together his origin story.

Groot first premiered in the comics in 1960, and is one of the many characters to have been created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Larry Lieber. Though his first appearance had him as an enemy invader bent on human experimentation, in 2006 they reintroduced him as the heroic, noble being more akin to what is in the MCU. It was not long before he was seen as a staple of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, making it a no-brainer that he would be featured in the 2014 MCU film about the team.

In an interview by Phase Zero (Comicbook.com's MCU podcast), Vin Diesel teases that Groot will be returning to his homeworld, Planet X, in upcoming MCU projects. Specifically, Diesel told the interviewer "If you're talking to Feige on Saturday, you can ask him about the Groot story that he's excited about; the return to Planet X." Diesel also spoke about why he chose to play Groot in the first place:

"The Groot character... There's a few characters like Iron Giant and Groot that I knew would be gifts for my kids in a way but the irony is the Groot character is a gift from my kids because I played that character, in part, because when Marvel sent over a book of Marvel characters, my three-year-old son at the time pointed at the picture of the tree. I never would have thought that that would be a character I would play. I had nightmares of playing the tree at the school play when I was 10 years old. Playing Groot is a wonderful thing. Taika is a friend of mine and he's such a talented director, as is James Gunn. Just talented directors, I take my hat off to them."

Groot is appearing in a few different upcoming projects for the MCU including the Disney+ series I Am Groot, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It is unknown which will feature a trip to Planet X, though most likely it will occur during the Disney+ series I Am Groot, which is already focused on the plant hero. Though having Thor visit Groot on Planet X during Love and Thunder might also be entertaining, and would make sense if the movie directly follows Groot's adventures on Disney+.

With Groot being such a pop-culture icon after his appearances in the MCU, it is not that surprising for Feige and company to shine the spotlight on him. Learning more about his people and his planet could help bring some more depth to Groot's backstory, and help explain his pseudo-resurrection after the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. And perhaps by introducing Planet X before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 they are setting up a major plotline and location for that film. If Groot is heading home, it stands to reason the rest of the team would not let him go alone.
