Filming has officially begun on His Dark Materials season 3 — with several new cast members announced. Based on Philip Pullman's acclaimed novels, the saga was adapted for television by the BBC in collaboration with HBO. Premiering in 2019, His Dark Materials centered on Lyra Belacqua, a young girl from a world in which souls manifest as animals outside of the body. Burdened with a great destiny, she ventured to various parallel worlds and crossed paths with a similiarly destined boy named Will Parry. With the stakes raised by the ending of His Dark Materials season 2, it was soon greenlit for a third outing.
In a new press release from HBO/BBC, production has gotten under way throughout Wales and England. His Dark Materials season 3 will adapted the third and final book in Pullman's original trilogy: The Amber Spyglass. The new episodes will mark the already-confirmed return of Dafne Keen as Lyra, Amir Wilson as Will, Simone Kirby as Mary Malone, Will Keen as Father President McPhail, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi, Ruta Gedminstas as Serafina Pekkala, Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter, and James McAvoy as Lord Asriel. They will joined by His Dark Materials newcomers Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Commander Ogunwe, Jamie Ward as Father Gomez, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Balthamos, Simon Harrison as Baruch, Chipo Chung as Xaphania, and Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe as Ama.
The official logline for His Dark Materials season 3 reads: "Season three will see Will, the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra, the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other." The directors for the episodes will include Amit Gupta, Charles Martin, and Weronika Tofilska. Showrunner Jack Thorne will be back on writing duty alongside several others. Though it will be one of the TV shows ending in 2021, His Dark Materials season 3 will no doubt go out in sublime fashion.
