Manifest Creator Promises Fans Closure No Matter How Long It Takes

Manifest creator Jeff Rake vows to give the fans closure, even if it takes over a year. NBC's twisty supernatural series Manifest first premiered in 2018 and became one of the biggest new shows of the season. The series centered on the passengers of Montenegro Air Flight 828, a standard trip from Jamaica to New York City that became a tragedy when, upon landing, the travelers realized they had somehow been missing for five years. Manifest began gradually unravelling the truth behind Flight 828, with NBC granting it three seasons.

However, diminishing ratings led NBC to cancel Manifest just a few weeks ago. Season 3 had come to a close only days before, and its cliffhanger ending left fans devastated by the cancellation. As is now common practice for axed shows, Manifest was immediately shopped to other networks and streaming services in the hopes that it could be saved. Netflix appeared to be a major contender in the proceedings, but last week brought the news that the behemoth streamer had passed on the chance to revive Manifest.

Though prospects look rather bleak right now, Rake isn't giving up so easily. On Sunday, Rake, who has also worked on shows like The Tomorrow People and The Mysteries of Laura, took to social media to offer some kind words to the Manifest fan base. "Your support is awe-inspiring," he wrote. Rake reaffirmed his determination to get closure for the series, explaining, "We’re trying to find a way to conclude the series. Could take a week, a month, a year. But we’re not giving up. You deserve an end to the story." He concluded his message with a last plea for fans: "Keep the conversation alive. If it works out, it’s because of YOU."

Rake has said he envisioned a 6-season plan for Manifest, so there is still a lot of story left to tell. Though the traditional modes of closure are cut off, Rake can get creative in his search to give Manifest a proper ending. Perhaps the series could go the way of Firefly, which was granted a feature-length movie after being cancelled. Fellow fan favorite NBC series Timeless got the chance to conclude its story with a television film, though that came with the support of the network. It isn't clear if NBC would help Manifest in such a way.

Still, Rake's determination to give closure to fans is admirable. For a storyteller, being prevented from seeing their ending through must sting, and the intention to tell Manifest's full story is likely just as much for Rake himself as it is for the fans. It isn't yet clear how this saga could come to an end, but fans shouldn't give up hope just yet. In fact, based on Rake's message, they should only get louder. Manifest might not get the ending everyone expected, but perhaps it can get something better.
