Metal Gear Solid Parody Game UnMetal Shows Off Stealth & Humor

Few would question that Metal Gear Solid is a staple in the history of video gaming, and Fran Games (otherwise known as unepic_fran) pays homage to it in a parody game, UnMetal. Metal Gear Solid released in the latter half of the ‘90s, directed by Hideo Kojima and published by Konami. Since then, it has become known a classic game from the 32-bit era of gaming, and chatter has emerged indicating that a remake could be on its way for PS5.

Unfortunately, this year’s E3 events are unlikely to include any Metal Gear Solid news, so fans may have to wait a bit longer for the remake announcement. After 2019, E3 had plans to shift towards an event for content creators instead of a trade show, but the outbreak of COVID-19 forced the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) to skip E3 2020. Now, E3 is back in 2021 with all-digital events, including the press conferences the expo is most famous for. However, it was announced nearly a month and a half ago that Konami withdrew from the E3 2021 events, and with that, things look grim for Metal Gear Solid.

While Metal Gear Solid news won’t be part of E3, a parody game called UnMetal took its place very shortly before the expo began. GameTrailers on YouTube released an official trailer for the game on Saturday that was shown during the Guerilla Collective Showcase. The game playfully references and takes jabs at the original Metal Gear Solid title, spawning an action-packed, humorous adventure that’s great for fans of the Metal Gear franchise. Fran Games released a free demo for the game on Steam earlier this month, although an official release date is still to be determined. Just looking at the trailer, the game appears to be a particularly entertaining parody, complete with an imitation of Snake’s iconic voice from Metal Gear Solid.

While UnMetal has the potential to hold Metal Gear fans over, it still can’t replace the excitement behind a true announcement from the franchise. There have been rumors of Konami preparing for big news in recent months, but little has been confirmed. In fact, the only headlines to come from the company in recent months have been dismal, and Metal Gear news has also been disappointing over the past few years: Hideo Kojima left Konami, Metal Gear Survive received an onslaught of negative reviews, Konami has shut down many of its in-house studios, and the Metal Gear Solid board game was canceled. However, despite all of these blows to the hopes of fans, the possibility of more Metal Gear Solid news still lingers.

Hopefully, Metal Gear Solid will return to its former glory in the near future, but until then, UnMetal appears to be a great nod to the franchise. The demo is available now on PC, and more news on this hilarious game would be more than welcomed as 2021 enters its second half.
