On a teen mystery like Pretty Little Liars, characters offer up surprises and it sometimes takes them a while to reveal their true selves. But once fans have watched every episode of this thrilling show, they can easily divide up the main and minor characters into heroes and villains. Everyone has a part to play in the disappearance of Alison DiLaurentis and the stalking of the liars.
While some people are obviously evil and fans dislike them immensely, some are fun villains who provide entertaining storylines. And just like some good characters are loveable, others have some problems that fans can't help but talk about.
10 A Hero Who Fans Hated: Aria Montgomery
Even though Aria is one of the main characters on Pretty Little Liars, many fans dislike her and wish that she would complain less and that she wouldn't always feel the need to investigate or spy on people.
Aria doesn't always seem mature and fans also have trouble supporting her romance with Ezra as he's an older teacher. Ezra has a negative effect on Aria and it's hard to imagine why she would continue to date him. While Aria is a hero in the story, helping her friends find out who A and A.D. are and supporting the other characters as they go through highs and lows in their personal lives, it's tough to love her.
9 A Villain Who Fans Loved: Mona Vanderwaal
Mona is one of the biggest villains on Pretty Little Liars as she's the first A and she gets revenge on the liars after being bullied by Ali for a long time. For some, there's no more powerful motivator than the desire to be popular.
While Mona should technically be widely disliked, it's impossible for fans to hate her. Mona shows herself to be a manipulator in some instances, but she's also kind, as she learns to love the liars and she has a fondness for her old best friend Hanna. There's also the fact that it's just plain fun watching Mona, especially when the mystery ends with her keeping Alex and Mary Drake in a dollhouse.
8 A Hero Who Fans Hated: Toby Cavanaugh
On the surface, Toby is a good person who protects his partner Spencer and her friends. He's loyal, finishes what he starts, and seems to be pretty popular in his small town of Rosewood. He even marries Yvonne when she's in the hospital as he tries to do the right thing at all times.
But despite these things, not every fan loves Toby, as he can make some frustrating choices. The worst thing that he ever does is join the Rosewood police force because he says he wants to keep Spencer safe. This seems strange as she can definitely take care of herself and she has a whole friend group behind her.
7 A Villain Who Fans Loved: Jenna Marshall
There are several reasons to hate Jenna. For one thing, she forces Toby to have an inappropriate relationship and it's impossible to support that as they're stepsiblings.
But forgetting about this difficult fact, fans do enjoy watching Jenna as she is carrying around a grudge that no one can deny. After Ali plans a prank that goes wrong and makes Jenna lose her eyesight, Jenna loathes Ali and the other liars. Fans know that Jenna is never up to any good and whenever she is walking around wearing sunglasses, she looks mysterious and it's exciting to think about what could happen.
6 A Hero Who Fans Hated: Nicole Gordon
If Nicole wasn't Ezra's love interest, it's possible that Pretty Little Liars fans would like her, as there's really nothing wrong with her. She's a smart, sweet person who is friends with Emily and goes missing while in South America.
Fans have a problem with her character because she stands between Aria and Ezra getting back together, and it's also a bit of a let-down when she goes missing and then is found, as the dramatic impact of this plotline is definitely lost.
5 A Villain Who Fans Loved: Melissa Hastings
From the very beginning of the series, Melissa is set up as Spencer's mean older sister. She steals Spencer's barn, which is a huge blow as Spencer decorated it and wanted to live there, and constantly competes with her.
Even though Melissa seems scary, as she's full of secrets and finally spills that she buried Bethany Young alive later on in the series, she's still a fairly likable character who fans find entertaining. No scene with Melissa is ever dull, that's for sure.
4 A Hero Who Fans Hated: Ezra Fitz
Many PLL fans ship Ezra and Aria, so for the most part, he's a hero as his relationship with Aria is meant to be positive, and when he joins the A-Team, he's not trying to cause any harm.
10 Most Memorable Storylines On Pretty Little Liars
Over time, Ezra becomes creepier, and the fact that he dates Aria when he's an older teacher can't be forgotten about, so many viewers dislike him and wish that she had chosen someone else to spend her life with. The age difference may not matter at the end of the show, but for most episodes, Ezra should pick someone his own age to date.
3 A Villain Who Fans Loved: Wren Kingston
At first, fans think that Wren is a fairly nice person, if misguided and lost in the drama of his personal life. He kisses Spencer while planning to marry Melissa, and over the years, he and Spencer randomly come into contact. Every time, he seems to really care about her.
At the end of the show, fans learn that Wren is totally evil, and an untrustworthy accomplice to Alex Drake. Despite all the bad things that Wren has done and how dangerous he is, fans can't help but appreciate that he's an important part of the overall mystery.
2 A Hero Who Fans Hated: Alison DiLaurentis
Ali can be seen as a villain at the beginning of Pretty Little Liars, as she's a mean girl who knows her friend's deepest and darkest secrets. However, when Ali comes back to Rosewood, fans see a new side of her and it can be argued that she becomes sweeter and learns the art of compassion.
But despite those changes in her character arc, Ali isn't universally beloved. It's still possible to see her as a self-centered person and it takes her a long time to recognize Emily's feelings for her. It can be argued that Ali takes Emily for granted.
1 A Villain Who Fans Loved: Sydney Driscoll
Sydney used to be on Mona's team and in season 7, she's a member of the A.D. Team and clearly evil. Fans seem to love Sydney, as she seems good at first and then turns out to be up to no good, which makes her entertaining and compelling to watch.
If she was simply a nice person who was a fellow swimmer like Emily, the show would be dull, and PLL fans know that the series is full of twists and turns. If a villain can keep people guessing and provide surprises, they should be considered one of the best.
