One sharp-eyed fan noticed that there is a particular, somewhat out-of-place image that keeps cropping up in many Resident Evil titles. The series has been around since the 90s and it appears that some elements have managed to stay part of the core franchise formula during that whole time.
Designing an immersive and effective video game world is crucial for any developer who wants to make a successful title, particularly in the horror genre. Little details can pull off a wide variety of effects from subtle, visual storytelling to directly manipulating how a player is supposed to feel at any given moment. Sometimes, however, certain details remain mysterious despite fitting in well with a game's aesthetic, and they do not necessarily have a purpose beyond that at first glance.
Reddit user amjoshuaf recently spotted one such detail littered throughout the Resident Evil franchise, and showcased it in a series of images. The motif is that of a water bearer the poster believes to be a symbol of Aquarius, the eleventh astrological sign in the Zodiac. Amjoshuaf's images span across many console and graphical generations throughout Resident Evil's history and it does appear to be a distinctly similar depiction throughout all the games.
Comments on amjoshuaf's post quickly dug into why this motif keeps appearing in Resident Evil titles. Though visually it fits well with the series aesthetic, some Reddit users pointed out that Aquarius' inclusion could be something much deeper. One commenter noted that Resident Evil often pulls from Greek mythology for its storytelling, which amjoshuaf backed up by comparing the first game to the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur in the labyrinth. Another, meanwhile, had a different theory by equating the image of the water bearer to life and how in these games life is always surrounded by death.
Unless the developers of Resident Evil explicitly give their reasons for the constant usage of the water bearer motif, which seems unlikely, it will continue to be a topic of speculation. There is always the possibility that those who make these games simply like how the image looks in this context and just reuse it because it works well. With all the other nods to Greek myth spread out across the series, however, there seems to be more to it than that. Clearly it was an intentional choice and even though players may never know the true reasoning behind it, Resident Evil fans will be able to interpret it however they see fit.
