Super Monkey Ball Mania Launch DLC Lets Fans Play As Classic Sega Consoles

New details about the launch DLC for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania have been revealed, including special skins that will allow the player to control a classic Sega video game console. This DLC will come with the Digital Deluxe version of the game, and will also be available for purchase separately.

Super Monkey Ball is one of Sega's quirkiest franchises. Players control the titular monkey, housed inside of a clear ball (not unlike those used as hamster toys). Players then maneuver across maze-like stages to reach the goal without falling off. While never as popular as Sonic or other Sega series, Super Monkey Ball still has a devout following. The last full game in the series was Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz for the PlayStation Vita.

The launch-day DLC for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania includes the Sega Legends Pack, according to Nintendo Life. The pack includes three skins based on some of Sega's home and portable consoles. The skins added are of the Sega Saturn, Game Gear, and Dreamcast. The Legends Pack and three other DLC packs will be included in the Digital Deluxe Edition or can be purchased separately for 4.99 USD.

The other three packs available will be the Classic Soundtrack Pack, the Classic Character Pack, and the Customization Pack. The first is fairly self-explanatory; it will enable players to listen to classic Super Monkey Ball music. The Classic Character Pack will give the player the option to play as old-school versions of the main six monkeys. Lastly, the Customization Pack adds three pink cosmetics for a select number of monkeys to wear. All pre-orders will also get access to the Bonus Cosmetic Pack, which features shirts, hats, and ball skins. The Bonus Cosmetic Pack will only be available through pre-ordering and will not be sold separately.

Given the off-the-wall nature of the base game, the ability to play as Sega consoles is appropriately wacky. It is presumably only a cosmetic change, but it does make for a fun idea that hardcore fans of Sega and the Monkey Ball series will likely still get quite a kick out of it. Even those less attached to Sega's history might find the appeal. Banana Mania might be a remaster of previous Monkey Ball titles, but it still has plenty of its own identity. Nevertheless, these more nostalgic throwback DLC packs have the chance to make a celebration of the franchise's rich history all the more immersive and comprehensive. If nothing else, the idea of navigating these stages as a Sega Saturn is too ridiculous to be anything but loveable.
