Fans of The Big Bang Theory have adored the show since it first aired in 2007. The series created hilarious characters, quippy one-liners, and humorous scenarios. From all the memorable characters the show introduced to fans, one character has stuck out among fans: Sheldon Cooper.
His wacky antics and quirky behavior made him an instant favorite among viewers. Despite being a hilarious character, though, Sheldon also has a difficult time adhering to social norms. He definitely marches to the beat of his own drum, but he has moments in the show where his social awkwardness can sometimes make moments on the show uncomfortable for viewers to enjoy.
10 His Inability To Tell A Small Lie
Sheldon may be an extremely awkward character, with many nonsensical storylines, but one of his most interesting qualities is that he cannot tell a lie. Sheldon also has difficulties keeping secrets from his friends and it physically pains him until he is able to share what he is hiding. Despite this being an admirable trait, it is also painfully awkward for viewers to witness.
When Sheldon first catches Leonard lying to Penny, he begins to feel stressed out and feels like it is necessary to create an elaborate backstory to cover up their lie. Sheldon's inability to tell small lies is awkward because he goes to great lengths to cover his tracks, which usually leads to him acting awkwardly and foolishly.
9 Sheldon Singing With Leonard's Mom
It is no secret to fans of the show that Sheldon is a big fan of Leonard's mom. He speaks of her highly and often expresses to Leonard how jealous he is of his childhood with a mother like Dr. Hofstadter, one of the low-key villains of The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon also goes to great lengths in order to impress Leonard's mom into liking him.
During one of the first times Sheldon and Dr. Hofstadter meet, he admits to her that he feels very comfortable around her. Leonard's mom also agrees that the two of them have similar characteristics. Then Sheldon suggests that they do something viewers found incredibly awkward: they sing a song together on a video game. This moment was awkward because it is a huge step out of character for Sheldon and the fact that he is willing to sing with Leonard's mom only makes it more awkward.
8 Sheldon Pranking Kripke
Sheldon learns more about acting appropriately in groups of people throughout the course of the series. He does his best to learn about sarcasm and work on his social skills. However, when he attempts to participate in pranks, it goes horribly wrong. Sheldon plans to prank Kripke after Kripke humiliates him during an interview.
Sheldon fills Kripke's lab with the ingredients to create a massive foam explosion. His prank is a success and he covers Kripke and various members of the university board in foam. Instead of letting the prank creator going unnamed, Sheldon sets up a video naming himself and his friends as the cause of the prank. This is awkward because it gets him in massive trouble with the university but he is unaware of why, further solidifying his confusion with social norms.
7 Embarrassing Punishment Of Amy
Sheldon definitely has a backward approach to handling difficult situations. He may be one of the smartest members of the group, but his inability to recognize inappropriate moments is his downfall. This is shown in his attempt to punish Amy for lying.
Amy falls ill with a horrible cold and, per their relationship agreement, Sheldon is required to take care of her. She starts feeling better but enjoys the attention too much, so she continues to act sick. Sheldon catches her lying and decides that spanking her is a fitting punishment. This moment is extremely awkward because Amy absolutely enjoys the punishment, while Sheldon is oblivious to how inappropriate the moment is, making this one of the many times Sheldon is wrong in The Big Bang Theory.
6 Sheldon's Constant Confusion With Relationships
It is no secret to fans of The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon has a difficult time grasping the importance of relationships. He makes it clear that he hates physical touch and affection, he doesn't understand why his friends have such an interest in the opposite sex, and he doesn't understand social cues in relationships.
This is something that Sheldon works with throughout the course of the series. Viewers find Sheldon's inability to grasp relationships awkward because it is cringy to hear the other characters constantly having to explain relationships to him. However, when he begins dating Amy, and their relationship develops season by season, he slowly begins to understand relationships better and the importance of having a partner in life.
5 His Constant Need To Publically Shame People
Sheldon is the self-appointed leader of the group. Because he takes on this leadership role, he also feels it necessary to punish his friends when they do something wrong. Sheldon had several friendships that nobody saw coming and his ability to reprimand his friends without a lot of pushback only allows his brand of punishment to get more outlandish over time.
Sheldon sets the routine for his friend group and anytime his friends go against that, he lashes out. Sheldon also insults his friends regularly about their jobs or intelligence. This is awkward for fans to watch because it is childish behavior and is also extremely rude. It also doesn't help that Sheldon doesn't see anything wrong with acting that way.
4 Acting Like A Child
Another personality trait of Sheldon's that fans find difficult to handle is his ability to act like a child in social situations. He throws tantrums when he doesn't get his way and often makes a scene in public. Sheldon also enjoys activities that children also enjoy.
There are also multiple moments in the show where Leonard and Penny act as surrogate parents to Sheldon and even argue over him. These moments are especially awkward to fans because Sheldon is a grown adult and his ability to act like a child is cringy for fans to watch.
3 His Difficulty Realizing When A Woman Is Flirting With Him
On top of Sheldon having difficulties understanding relationships and social cues, he also has a hard time understanding when women flirt with him. Because Sheldon doesn't share the same interest in the opposite sex as the rest of his friends, he has a difficult time knowing when a woman finds him attractive.
One woman that stands out is Ramona Nowitzki. She was a grad student who worked with Sheldon that also had a massive crush on him. Sheldon was oblivious to this, even though the rest of his friends noticed immediately. Sheldon also is oblivious when Amy first with him throughout the course of their relationship.
2 Sheldon's HR Snafu
One of the most awkward moments for fans to endure was when Sheldon had a cringy encounter with the HR department in season 6 episode 12. In this episode, Sheldon berates his assistant Alex for flirting with Leonard. While he talks to her, he insults her numerous times, prompting Alex to file a sexual harassment charge for his behavior.
During his meeting with HR, Sheldon has a hard time noticing that he is also insulting the HR Administrator, Mrs. Davis. He insults Mrs. Davis for being a female and even makes racist comments towards her. Viewers find this scene with Sheldon extremely awkward to watch because of Sheldon's behavior and inability to see how horrible his comments are.
1 Sheldon's Drunken Speech
By far one of the most socially awkward moments Sheldon has is when he gives his drunken speech in season 3 episode 18. During this episode, Sheldon is receiving an award but has to give a speech. After telling his friends how difficult it is for him to public speak, they attempt to boost his confidence so he can accept his award.
The night of the ceremony, however, Sheldon is still having a difficult time and is contemplating how to get out of giving his speech. Penny gets tired of him complaining and begins to give him alcohol to calm his nerves. This gets Sheldon drunk quickly and he gives his speech in an embarrassing manner, one of the most iconic scenes of any TBBT main character. This is awkward for fans to endure because of Sheldon's drunken behavior and his sad attempt to make jokes while inebriated.
