At the start of The Office, it was apparent that Dwight and Jim rarely got along. They were too competitive and too different of people to get along. But as the show goes on, time proves to be the one thing that holds Dwight and Jim together. They had been through too much as coworkers and friends to not give in to a friendship.
Aside from the toxic (albeit hilarious) relationship between Michael and Toby, Dwight and Jim come in second place with the most destructive relationship. From pranking each other to being a part of each other's weddings, Jim and Dwight have been through the wringer as friends.
9 Season 1: Cutthroat Friends
The first season only touched the surface of Dwight and Jim’s friendship. Viewers saw how cutthroat they could be when Dwight stole Jim’s biggest sale of the year in ‘Diversity Day.’ Jim got revenge on Dwight, of course, in ‘Healthcare,’ when he made up various diseases that he and Pam had when Dwight asked for everyone’s medical history. By the end of the short season, Dwight shot his shot with Katy—the purse girl—but Jim was the one who ended up taking her home.
8 Season 2: Dwight Comes Out Victorious And Jim Rethinks The Scranton Branch
Looking at the ups and downs of Dwight and Jim’s friendship, it’s surprising that Jim invited Dwight to his house party in ‘Email Survalience.’ But things get back to normal when Jim gave Dwight bad advice when it was announced that Dwight had to speak at a salesman convention. The advice Jim gave Dwight was in jest but it ended up working for Dwight in the end.
By the end of the season, their friendship was at an all-time low when Dwight found out that Toby never gave Michael all of his complaints against Jim. Dwight was relentless in his pursuit to get Jim fired. Michael, however, found it hard to fire Jim because not only was he a great salesman but he was a friend. Dwight didn’t need to worry for long though because Jim transferred to Stamford shortly afterward.
7 Season 3: Dwight Saves Jim's Life
At the start of the season, Jim and Dwight were separated because of Jim’s transfer but the two stayed in touch because of Jim’s love for pranks. Dwight called Jim regarding “Gaydar” and Jim sent Dwight faxes pretending to be him from the future. The two were finally reunited when Stamford closed and Jim came back to Scranton. In ‘The Negotiation,’ Dwight’s hidden appreciation for Jim shined through when Roy barged in and tried attacking Jim. Dwight saved the day with pepper spray and Jim felt like he owed him his life.
6 Season 4: Jim Lends A Helping Hand And The Two Stay Civil Yet Competitive
In season 4, a lot was happening in Dwight and Jim's personal lives. Angela broke Dwight's heart after he killed her cat, and Jim and Pam were finally together. In 'Money,' viewers saw Jim lend a helping hand to Dwight when he was sitting in the stairway crying over Angela.
Without a hint of condescension, Jim let Dwight know that he was there for him. When Jim left silently, Dwight reached to hug Jim, proving how much Dwight needed him at that moment. As the season went on, the two were civil with each other and back to their pranking ways.
5 Season 5: Charles Miner Comes To Town As They Team Up Against Kelly
Jim and Dwight continued on a steady road of friendship in season 5. In 'Customer Survey,' the two came together to take down Kelly who gave them poor performance reviews because they never went to her America's Got Talent party. They came together again in 'Lecture Circuit: Part 1' when they—yet again—forgot Kelly's birthday and had to throw her an impromptu birthday party. Where the two clashed was when Charles Miner came to the Scranton branch. Charles and Jim got off on a bad start, which made Dwight incredibly happy. He then went out of his way to become Charles's righthand man to make Jim's life hell.
4 Season 6: Jim Reigns Supreme As Co-Manager And Dwight Tries To Take Him Down
When Charles left, Michael and Jim became co-managers for a short time, which Dwight despised. Dwight did everything he could to get Jim to fail at his new position (including bugging his office). In 'Double Date,' Dwight even went so far as to do nice things for everyone in the office so that they had no choice but to return the favor, which he would then use to dethrone Jim. Dwight continued this destructive path in 'Scott's Tots' when he made Jim look selfish in an employee of the month scheme. But by season 7, both men soften up with each other.
3 Season 7: Jim And Dwight Show Their Softer Sides
In 'Counseling,' Jim showed Dwight compassion when he was banned from entering a store based on how he was dressed. Jim helped dress Dwight in nice clothes to show the store owner what he was missing — just like in Pretty Woman. Jim didn't need to do this, but it proved that he had a soft spot for Dwight. Likewise, Jim proved to have feelings for Jim and Pam in 'Viewing Party' when he took care of Cece at Gabe's Glee party. These small acts in the season went a long way and were the start of a new leaf for the duo.
2 Season 8: Jim Saves Dwight From Being Fired
Jim was up to his old pranking ways in 'Garden Party,' but that side of his was never going to change no matter how friendly he and Dwight were becoming. And when an opportunity to be promoted at Sabre occurred, Dwight did everything he could to get the position. Sadly, Jim found out that Robert California was planning on axing whoever got the position, so he had no choice but to stall Dwight long enough for Nellie to give Dwight's position to Packer. Dwight was at a loss for words, especially since Jim saved him from being fired.
1 Season 9: From Enemies To Best Friends
In season 9, Jim was ready to move on from Dunder Mifflin and it appeared that his absence was taking a toll on Dwight. As much as Dwight and Jim loathed each other, they missed each other. They made each other better salesmen.
In 'Livin' the Dream,' Dwight is finally promoted to regional manager and he appoints Jim as his assistant. The two were finally in harmony. But, as much fun as it was seeing them rule Dunder Mifflin together, it was even better seeing Dwight choose Jim as his "bestest mensch" on his wedding day. The two finally found peace with each other.
