Much like the Suicide Squad's first adventure on the big screen in 2016, Rick Flag was also recruited to lead the team in the comics. His official origins have changed over the years, mostly due to Wade Eiling's brainwashing claims. But he is still the field leader of the Squad, doing his best to keep them on the straight and narrow.
Unlike his "teammates," Rick is a definitive hero and a man who always tries to do the right thing. Despite working with criminals all day, he has managed to fit in more than a few positive moments over the years.

Rick Flag is an elite soldier who works with Task Force X as a field commander and handler. This frequently puts him directly in the path of superpowered threats, including the ones on his own team.
Like Batman or Green Arrow, Flag does all of this without any kind of superpowers whatsoever. He has proven himself on the battlefield on more than one occasion, taking control of the situation with his advanced military training and experience.
9 Dating His Teammate Karin Grace
The earliest version of Task Force X that Rick was part of was completely public and not loaded with blackmailed supervillains. It consisted of Flag, astrophysicist Hugh Evans, nuclear physicist Jess Bright, and space medicine expert Karin Grace.
Flag and Grace fell in love while working together. Unfortunately, their secret relationship indirectly led to the apparent deaths of Evans and Bright, which pretty much ruined their meet-cute story. Nevertheless, their relationship still had a profound effect on fans.
8 Has A Son With Karin
Over the years, Rick Flag's origins and backstory have changed rather dramatically as one retcon removed him from the Task Force X iteration with Grace, Bright, and Evans. Instead, Frank Rock took his place.
But there was a time that the relationship between Rick and Karin led to the birth of a son, Rick Flag III. It was likely one of the few bright spots during his long career with a team called the Suicide Squad.
7 Was Once Saved By Love
The early iteration of the team, led by Flag, went on several missions that were more akin to Tomb Raider adventures than anything else. Also at that point, everyone was usually expected to return, unlike the current teams.
One adventure saw Task Force X face off against a villain called the Mirage Master, who tried to manipulate the team into killing each other. But it was Karin's love that helped him see through the mind control and saved the day.
6 Asked To Join Task Force X
In some versions of history, Flag's father was part of a team called the Suicide Squadron. They weren't sent in because they were disposable but because they were willing to sacrifice themselves to save their allies.
When his father's old team was later revived under the name Task Force X, Rick was honored to be invited to join. He was less honored to join Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad, mainly because he didn't trust her at all and rightfully so.
5 Honored The Release Of The Villains
When Waller decided to revive the concept, she decided to use disposable supervillains to conduct impossible missions. Rick Flag joined as the field leader with Blockbuster, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Bronze Tiger, and Deadshot filling out the roster.
Their first mission was to destroy the monster Brimstone. Much to Waller's dismay, they survived. She attempted to go back on her deal to free them if they were successful, but Flag made sure Waller kept her word. This proved him to be a man of honor.
4 He Can Hold His Own Against Batman
This one might not be so much heartwarming as it is incredibly impressive. Batman is generally considered to be one of the best hand-to-hand combatants DC has to offer. Being able to match him is a big deal.
While Rick Flag probably couldn't defeat Batman in a fight, he has fought the Caped Crusader to a standstill. This puts Rick Flag in the same top tier as Batman, and someone that other fighters should take seriously.
3 Saved Deadshot From Assassination
One of the longest-serving members of the Suicide Squad is Deadshot, possibly the greatest marksman in DC Comics. Though the fact that he keeps ending up on the Squad does call into question how good he at getting away after committing a crime.
Regardless, his relationship with Rick Flag is difficult at best as they keep butting heads. But that doesn't mean that Rick would not protect Deadshot's life. He once even put his own life on the line to save his perennial teammate from being assassinated.
2 Forms A Mission Rescue Nemesis
The Suicide Squad might be the only super team where the death of a member is always part of the plan. At the same time, a situation can take a left turn, which includes a member being taken prisoner by an enemy instead of dying.
This happened on a mission with Nemesis who was captured. Going against Waller's orders, Flag would eventually lead a rescue mission to recover her. They ended up teaming up with Justice League International to finish save her.
1 Chose To Stay After Learning The Truth
General Wade Eiling has proved to be a thorn in the side of many superheroes in DC, possibly more so for Rick Flag. It turned out that most of Flag's earliest memories of Task Force X were planted by Eiling. Even his identity as "Rick Flag" was faked.
When Eiling attempted to usurp control of the Suicide Squad from Amanda Waller, Flag defeated him and kept her in power. She offered him the chance to finally walk away and live his life, but Flag stayed as he thought the world needed him in that role.
