The Vampire Diaries Universe included many witches over its three shows. While some appear in covens, such as the Parker family in the Gemini Coven or the witches of New Orleans, others appeared solo or came from long-lasting witch families, such as Bonnie Bennett or Freya Mikaelson. Witches are some of the most necessary supernaturals in the universe. They keep the balance, and a witch's allegiance could help turn the tide in a war between vampires and werewolves or any other opponent.
Many witches have been introduced into the world between The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies. Of course, there have been witches more powerful throughout each show than others, but all have played an integral role in The Vampire Diaries Universe.
10 Vincent Griffith
When the covens needed a leader, Vincent was seen as the next Regent. He had a long history with the Hollow and helped split it into each of the Mikaelsons.
While Vincent claims numerous times he is done helping the Mikaelsons, he does become Marcel's ally. After the Mikaelsons and Marcel leave New Orleans, Vincent works with Hayley, Josh, and Freya to balance the French Quarter.
9 Esther Mikaelson
Esther Mikaelson, also known as the Original Witch, was one of the most powerful witches. Yet, her biggest and worst accomplishment was creating vampires. Esther's creation eventually took on a life of its own, going from trying to be a stronger species to also being a blood-thirsty danger.
Esther had the power to do horrifying things to her family, and like vampires, they had less power to fight her with, although they could manage it from time to time. Esther even comes back from the dead during the second season of The Originals.
8 Silas
Silas is shown to have immense power even while he is stuck as a statue. With an ability to get inside people's heads, Silas can make them see or do whatever he wants. He got an entire town to watch as he killed Bonnie Bennett's father.
Silas tricked everyone by appearing as different people until finally revealing his true face to Stefan in "Graduation." Although Silas's main goal was to die and join Amara in the afterlife, unforeseen circumstances prevented that plan.
7 Qetsiyah
As one of the most powerful witches in history, Qetsiyah certainly made an impression on the supernatural world. She created the initial immortality potion and a cure for it as well. However, Qetsiyah's accomplishments went beyond that.
She used Amara as an anchor to create the Other Side, an entire dimension meant to separate the supernatural dead from the mortal. Qetsiyah was even responsible for the Brotherhood of the Five. Their goal was to deliver a cure to Silas and make him drink it to reunite with Qetsiyah, forever separating him from Amara.
6 Hope Mikaelson
Hope proved herself to be extremely powerful during The Originals. Dahlia even predicted and explained to Klaus that Hope would be a potent witch. As a child and later teenager during The Originals, Hope certainly shows her capacity for magic.
But, with Hope front and center on Legacies, she is the most powerful character in the series. As a Tribrid, Hope is already powerful in her own right, but as a witch, while she still has more to experience as she grasps what she is capable of. Hope has the ability to become a far more dangerous witch.
5 Kai Parker
Kai Parker was the first siphon witch The Vampire Diaries ever introduced. Unlike everyone else, Kai does not hold magic within him. Instead, he can only use magic once he has taken it from others. This need, and his difficult background, eventually made Kai into a dangerous foe.
Kai beat Luke in the Merge, eventually becoming one of the most powerful people around. But, his power only grew after Kai transitioned into a Heretic. As a vampire with a siphon witch ability, Kai breaks the laws of nature by being a vampire and witch simultaneously.
4 Dahlia
As powerful as Esther is, her older sister Dahlia is even more so. Dahlia held immense magical ability but knew how to control her power. Still, that did not stop her from doing horrifying things anyway.
Dahlia may have been magically gifted, but she did not have much compassion. In the end, Dahlia and Esther died together.
3 The Hollow
The Hollow is one of the biggest villains on The Originals. Initially, the Hollow was a mighty human witch. However, she was so strong that the covens feared her and even made a plan to kill her.
When she died, the Hollow cast one last curse among those that wished her end, and as she died, they transformed into the first werewolves. In the final two seasons of The Originals, the Hollow's power is still strong and significant enough to cause damage to Hope and her family.
2 Freya Mikaelson
Unlike her siblings, Freya did not survive a thousand years by being a vampire. Instead, because she spent the millennium with Dahlia. The two continued to exist by only being awake for one year every century, giving them more power in their sleep while also holding onto their youth for far longer. As the firstborn of the next generation, Freya already holds significant power, and Dahlia's flashbacks prove that Freya, while not in control, unleashed untold power.
Yet, when Freya was in control, she proved to be one of the most powerful witches in any of the three shows. Her knowledge of magic even comes in handy during Legacies, when she helps Josie understand the spell to bring everyone's memories of Hope back.
1 Bonnie Bennett
As powerful as Freya Mikaelson is, Bonnie Bennett may actually be stronger. Bonnie has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with. She will not back down from a fight because the situation may be difficult and will save her friends no matter what. Bonnie stepped up to fight, even when she was unsure if she still had magic.
Although Bonnie's relationship with her powers has been up and down, Bonnie always found the power to come through and save the day when the moment called for it. Bonnie's plan and power are why Mystic Falls remained standing the night Katherine wanted to destroy it in Hellfire. Bonnie has done the impossible and comes out the victor.
