In the Heights star Anthony Ramos says Transformers 7 will be very different from past entries in the franchise. Paramount Pictures launched the Transformers franchise in 2007 with the help of Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay. The latter directed the first five movies in the franchise, which starred Shia LaBeouf for the first three and Mark Wahlberg in the last two. These Transformers movies gained a reputation for making lots of money but receiving poor reviews. Paramount rebooted the franchise in 2018 with Bumblebee, placing Hailee Steinfeld in the lead, but now a new movie is in the works.
Paramount has spent the last year feverishly developing a new installment in the Transformers franchise. The 2022 film landed Creed II's Steven Caple Jr. as its director in late 2020, which allowed the project to move into the casting phase shortly thereafter. It was later revealed that Hamilton and In the Heights star Anthony Ramos will play the lead role, with Judas and the Black Messiah's Dominique Fishback landing the female lead role. Details on the plot and characters, and even its continuity with the six previous Transformers movies, are not yet known. But, fans should expect something different.
Now that In the Heights is out in theaters and available on HBO Max, Anthony Ramos is doing press to promote the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical. During a recent interview with Variety, he was also asked about his upcoming involvement in Transformers 7. He mentioned that he's just started working on the movie and is very excited for audiences to see what Steven Caple Jr. has in store. Ramos also noted that the new Transformers will be very different, especially when it comes to the diversity of its leads.

After having a mostly white team of creatives and cast members, the Transformers franchise started to make small strides in bringing some diversity to the screen in later installments. This came after the franchise featured depictions of robots that many found to be racist and stereotypical portrayals of minorities. Steinfeld later became the first woman to lead a movie in the series with Bumblebee, while Isabela Merced's role in Transformers: The Last Knight gave the young Peruvian actress a major role. However, Transformers 7 is shaping up to be the most diverse film in the franchise with Ramos, Fishback, and Caple Jr. leading the charge.
The increased diversity is one of many ways that Transformers 7 can separate itself from previous movies. The inclusion of talented leads like Ramos and Fishback ensures that this won't be the film to ditch human characters completely, but hopefully the script gives them a great reason to be involved in the story. Bumblebee did a wonderful job in that regard and still delivered plenty of Transformers action that audiences want to see. Since Transformers 7 is rumored to take place in the same universe as Bumblebee, there could even be connections between the two films. Now, fans will have to hope that the new Transformers sequel is an even bigger box office success so Paramount continues down this path with the franchise.
