Because it was so well planned, The Vampire Diaries found a way to incorporate earlier moments in later seasons to display how much everyone has grown. The supernatural drama relies heavily on elements such as foreshadowing, and most plotlines receive some sort of follow-through.
Even the fan-favorite relationship between Klaus and Caroline continued on after the show ended by giving fans closure in The Originals. One of the best parts of rewatching the show is catching all the bits that pop up later, in some shape or form. Whether it's two things contradicting each other, or quotes that come back into play, The Vampire Diaries has plenty of full-circle moments.
10 Elena Writing In Her Diary In The Graveyard
In the pilot episode of the series, Elena sits in the graveyard by her parents' headstones and writes a rather disheartening entry in her diary. A crow causes Elena to leave, and the silhouette of a man appears behind a cloud of fog. Unbeknownst to Elena at the time, the man was Damon Salvatore.
Paralleling the pilot, Elena writes in the graveyard in the series finale. She sits in front of the Salvatore plot and recounts how Stefan brought her back to life and made her realize that happiness was still possible. To top things off, a crow flies overhead, and Damon appears with his hand outstretched to Elena.
9 Caroline And Stefan's June Wedding
The episodes in season 8 of The Vampire Diaries were all named after quotes from the beginning of the series. Stefan and Caroline get married in Season 8 Episode 15, "We're Planning a June Wedding," which is a callback to the show's pilot.
Caroline is taken with Stefan from the moment she sees him, but it took a long time for Stefan to return her affection. He even tells Caroline that the two of them are never going to happen, which makes this full circle moment all the more satisfying.
8 "However Long It Takes"
Before Klaus left The Vampire Diaries to star on The Originals, he told Caroline he wanted to be her last love, however long it would take. Caroline and Klaus go their separate ways, but there were Easter Eggs throughout both shows that implied they never let go of one another completely.
In the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, Caroline receives a donation for the Salvatore Boarding School, as well as a letter from Klaus. He ends the letter with "However long it takes," while Alaric's voiceover tells the audience that the message is the start of another story.
7 Elena Runs Into Stefan In The Hallway
Elena and Stefan first met when she bumped into him in the school hallway. Before Elena is put in a supernatural-induced coma, Stefan guarantees that the next time they see each other it won't be in high school. However, after Stefan dies he appears to Elena in limbo.
She runs into him in a manifestation of the school hallway, and they get a chance to say their goodbyes. Not only was the scene nostalgic, but because Stefan and Elena started it all, their final scene was especially heartbreaking.
6 "That's For Me To Know And For You To...Dot Dot Dot."
There are plenty of underrated quotes in The Vampire Diaries, and one of them is said at the very beginning of the show. When Damon was still the big bad, Stefan was desperate to know what he was planning. Damon just replied with, "That's for me to know, and for you to...dot dot dot."
In the series finale, Katherine returns from hell and is obviously up to no good. But Katherine Pierce never reveals her master plans, and when prompted she echoes Damon's line back to him.
5 Damon And Elena Kiss In Front Of The Fireplace
After Damon killed Jeremy in the heat of the moment, Elena declares that she hates him. Damon is clearly frustrated with himself for his actions and is seen standing alone in front of the fireplace and throwing his glass into the flames.
When Elena tells Damon she loves him after being freed from the sire bond, they kiss in the same spot. The scene is shot exactly as the previous one, and it shows Damon and Elena's progression from hate to love.
4 "Hello Brother"
Stefan and Damon's relationship has always been at the center of The Vampire Diaries, which is why the line "Hello brother," is the biggest full circle moment of the series. It's Damon's first line and last line, but the delivery is what stands out the most.
The first time Damon and Stefan greet each other, it's full of malice and spite. However, when they reunite at the end of the show, their reunion is full of love. When they embraced each other in the afterlife, they were both finally at peace.
3 Klaus's Voicemail To Caroline
In the backdoor pilot of The Originals, Klaus goes to New Orleans and leaves a voicemail for Caroline. He tells her that all he can think about is showing her his favorite place in the world and hopes that one day she'll let him.
Klaus and Caroline's relationship evolves drastically, and Caroline shows up at his door just like he's always wanted her to. She plays the voicemail he left over a decade ago and tells Klaus that he owes her a tour.
2 Stefan Is Reunited With Lexi In Death
Lexi stood by Stefan through thick and thin. She spent the last century and a half helping him stay in control, and Stefan never would be who he was without her friendship. She was killed by Damon in season 1 but her ghost continued to pop up on occasion.
The two never get to stick together for long, and Stefan always ends up losing her right when he's found her again. When Stefan crosses over to the afterlife, he reunites with Lexi and repeats what she said to him on the night she died: "I was feeling epic."
1 "I'm Sure There Are About A Billion People You'd Rather Be Here With"
Most of the characters had formed strong bonds with each other by Season 6, but Damon and Bonnie never got along. They were constantly at each other's throats, and Bonnie, especially, had never been a big fan of her best friend's boyfriend. When they get caught up in the destruction of the Other Side, Bonnie and Damon and forced to turn to each other for comfort.
Bonnie says that she knows there are a million other people they'd both rather be there with, but takes his hand anyway. After their time together in the prison world, Bonnie and Damon have a strong love for each other and eventually become best friends. Before they escape, Damon echoes Bonnie's words and says, "I'm sure they are about a billion other people you'd rather be here with." This time, her response is, "Not exactly."
