Almost every movie or show has a villain in some capacity. Whether the villain is a downright terrifying individual with evil ambitions, or someone who has had a sad past that makes the viewer feel for them, these characters play important roles in stories of all shapes and sizes, testing our protagonist in captivating ways. However, while some villains are too cruel to sympathize with, there are simultaneously some in animated movies that are almost just as loved as the protagonist.
Even though these characters and films are targeted towards younger audiences, anyone can fall in love with these villains, and their likability proves that a movie is more entertaining when the villain is multidimensional, earning our interest and occasional adoration.
10 The Grinch
The Grinch has appeared in a number of holiday classics inspired by the Dr. Seuss story, but the premise always stays the same. In the beginning, the Grinch appears to be pessimistic, angry, and isolated from the others who come together to celebrate Christmas. Even though the Grinch is the main character, he comes off as a villain to the entire town, and people fear him. It's not until the very end that the Grinch has a change of heart and begins to warm up to the idea of coming together and celebrating. Viewers cannot help but find the Grinch not only likable, but relatable, and the change in him is satisfying to see.
9 Bruce
Finding Nemo has been around for almost two decades, and it is still a wide favorite for many. While Merlin and Dory travel to find Nemo, they run across a trio of sharks, Bruce being the leader of the group. Bruce comes off as haunting, and it's clear he is portrayed as a bad guy. Even though his line about how fish are friends and not food seems comforting, once he smells a hint of blood, he goes crazy and tries to eat both Merlin and Dory. Still, when this happens, viewers can't be all too mad at Bruce, as these are his natural instincts, and he's still willing to try to be friends.
8 The Beast
In the Disney princess movie Beauty and the Beast, the titular Beast is portrayed as a villain in the beginning. Everyone in the town has a horrible view of him, and even when Belle meets him, he doesn't seem like a nice character. His low voice and angry demeanor makes viewers weary.
Overtime, though, Belle learns more about him, as do the viewers. It turns out the Beast isn't what everyone perceives him to be. Not only is he not a beast, but he's a human being, only turned into this animal. This is another example of a villain who has a change of heart and was initially misunderstood.
7 Cruella De Vil
Cruella de Vil is the definition of greedy and evil in the movie 101 Dalmatians, but there is something about her character that draw viewers in. Her presence is bright, showcasing her black and white hair and fluffy coats. She carries herself well and holds her standards high Cruella is a natural villain, especially with how she kidnaps dogs to use for their fur, but she is snarky, sneaky, and a well-developed character who intrigues the audience.
6 Hades
Hades is the main antagonist in the movie, Hercules, but viewers can't help but find him entertaining with his charm and comedic personality. Even though his humor is for his own benefit and he pushes others down without a second thought, he is a villain after all. His temper is frail, and any small inconvenience can set him off in a fiery rage. Still, he is known for giving others second chances and is always loyal on his end. Even though he is a villain, viewers appreciate his screen time and witty words to make the plot more interesting.
5 Lord Farquaad
Even though he only appears in the first Shrek movie, Lord Farquaad made himself known. He is the ruler of the kingdom who wants all fairytale creatures out of the land. Even though he is a ruthless villain, he is a wonderful comedic who has given the audience a lot of Shrek memes to use other the years. He has a lot of personality and character within such a small body, but he is still just villainous enough for the viewers to want him to be defeated.
4 Yzma & Kronk
This duo from Emperor's New Groove is a classic fan favorite for many. In the film, it's clear that Yzma is the clear villain, while Kronk is there for the humor and to help out Yzma when needed. Yzma never really changes over the movie, marking her as the ultimate villain, but Kronk was not made to be an antagonist. Still, the two of them together makes for quite entertaining viewing. They are opposites, but the way they work together and hit bumps on the road is amusing for viewers.
3 Gru
Stealing the moon seems like quite the crime, but when Gru from Despicable Me takes in three young girls to help him with his plan, they end up stealing his heart instead. In the beginning, Gru is shown as a pure villain, and his rivalry with Vector is positioned as a "villain vs. villain" match-up. Additionally, Gru's all black house, his large and scary vehicle, and his killer dog are all good hints as to who Gru is at the start.
But, as in most movies, there is a change of heart for the main character. Gru ends up learning from the three girls, whether it's discovering love, selflessness, or compassion. By the end, Gru leaves his villain ways and becomes a hero. However, even in the beginning when he was a villain, viewers loved his attitude and actions and knew there was more beneath his "sinister" surface.
2 Anton Ego
Ratatouille has lots of storylines that are followed throughout the film, but one of them is pleasing the food critic Anton Ego, the tall and scary man who is as picky as one can get. He comes off as strict, mysterious, and closed off. His presence scares the entire crew in the restaurant. He is there to ultimately bring down Chef Gusteau and his restaurant, but by the end, he faces some sort of redemption. While he eats the delicious looking plate of Ratatouille, he falls into a flashback of his life. This allows the viewer to see some backstory of this character and see that his life has never been easy. This change of attitude by the end makes the title of the villain off for him. Viewers are left with a sense of enlightment from Anton.
1 Tai Lung
In Kung Fu Panda, Tai Lung takes the role as the villain, but he is a unique one. He is one of the few who not only has a reason to be a villain, but a grievance too. It was Tai Lung who trained and dream of being the Dragon Warrior, but after he lost his chance, he tried to make things right in his mind. This motive makes the viewers care and sympathize for him, as well as see Shifu's own ignorance while training Tai Lung and how the astonishment shows on his face when he is disregarded to take the role. There is an aspect there that shows how Tai Lung was thrown off guard, and his actions come from some reason. Viewers understand the background of this villain and can see how he is truly a good person under his motives.
