Amelia Shepherd and Maggie Pierce are two such characters on the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy whom fans didn't exactly love when they first started out. Amelia appeared irresponsible to a large extent and Maggie wasn't really a delight to be around.

However, over time, these two women have carved out their own niche and gone on to become adorable characters whose fates fans can't wait to find out. These two women also have a solid friendship, as they see each other through difficult phases in each other's lives, offer advice and support each other unconditionally. Their love for each other isn't guided by biology, but simply by the fact they care for each other in a relationship that borders on sisterhood.

9 Their Love For Meredith

Meredith is the main reason why Amelia and Maggie connected. As Meredith's half-sister, Maggie became part of her family in spite of the rocky start to their relationship. And of course, Amelia only came to live with her older brother and his wife for a brief while, only to end up staying forever.

The two women's attachment to Meredith didn't begin right off the bat, as fans might recall. Meredith was particularly mean to Maggie even before she had discovered her connection to her, and she didn't really love her sister-in-law very much either when the latter first came to Seattle. However, over time, as Meredith and Maggie attempted to forge a relationship, Maggie also found herself inadvertently bonding with Amelia too. Since then, Maggie, Amelia, and Meredith's bond has become Grey's Anatomy's ultimate sisterhood.

8 Aunts To The Grey-Shepherd Children

Both Amelia and Maggie have another thing in common, which brings them close, and that is their affection for the Grey-Shepherd kids. As aunts to Derek and Meredith's three children, these two women have proved themselves to be strong and loving beyond words.

After Derek's horrifying death, the two sisters banded together to take care of the kids - there were two at the time, as Meredith was pregnant with little Ellis. But even later, Maggie and Amelia helped Meredith around the house and with the children - especially when she was hospitalized in season 17. The love the two women have for the kids is another way the bond between them is strengthened.

7 They Confide In One Another About Their Worries

One of the biggest foundations of Maggie and Amelia's friendship is the way they have been there for each other when either one of them has been frustrated or upset.

For instance, Amelia opened up to Maggie when she was in a very tough place, uncertain about the identity of her baby's father. Maggie, too, has confided in Amelia about her worries, particularly about issues in the healthcare system. Being there for each other when they really need it makes their friendship even more beautiful.

6 They Have Both Helped Each Other Through Personal Tragedies

Amelia and Maggie grew closer after they helped each other through some personal tragedies. Amelia has had several heartbreaking moments on Grey's Anatomy. One that was shown to impact her greatly was the death of her brother, Derek, as she struggled with the fact that she never got to say goodbye to him. Maggie has also been through some tough times. Her adoptive mother, whom she loved very much, passed away under tragic circumstances and her cousin died while she was operating on her.

Through all these moments, both Maggie and Amelia became pillars of support for each other, doing their best to make sure that the other was looking after themselves and checking up with them at work too. Most fans will also agree that these were pivotal moments in their friendship as it proved that someone doesn't have to have the same blood to be considered family.

5 They Have Matured Over The Years

Maggie, when she was first introduced, was not the most likable of characters - to the point that she could be sulky and irritating at times. And Amelia, as fans know only too well, could be a little outspoken.

But both the ladies have visibly matured in recent years. Maggie is way more likable as a person and makes mature decisions while Amelia does take fewer risks. They had been with each other in this journey towards maturity, and that helped cement their friendship.

4 They Support Each Other In The Most Random Decisions

Maggie and Amelia have not just listened to each other vent but have also been there for each other for the most random decisions taken at the spur of the moment.

For instance, Maggie supported Amelia when the latter developed cold feet right before she was supposed to marry Owen. Meredith and Maggie accompanied Amelia as she tried to make up her mind. Even though logic didn't necessarily dictate their actions, Maggie did what any best friend would do and supported Amelia with what she needed.

3 Their Friendship Mirrors That Of Meredith & Cristina

Maggie and Amelia's relationship mirrors one of the best friendships on Grey's Anatomy: Meredith and Cristina's. That had been the most important relationship on the show alongside that of Meredith and Derek's.

True, Maggie hasn't yet declared Amelia to be her person or vice versa, but the bond the two have come to share has become a running theme on the show that is known for highlighting female friendship. Meredith too is part of this bond, and the three seem to have an unwritten agreement of sisterhood.

2 They Encourage Each Other With Their Love Lives

Maggie and Amelia encouraging each other to get busy in their respective love lives is friendship at its best. For those who remember, Maggie had given her blessings to Amelia to be with DeLuca while Amelia, too, encouraged her to try her luck with the Ortho god, Atticus Lincoln.

The two women subtly pushing each other and even suggesting possible choices for romantic partners is quite the epitome of the typical friendship that so many people all over the world are familiar with.

1 They Are Both Strong Women

Both Amelia and Maggie are strong, empowered women and surgeons who excel in their fields. They represent some of Shondaland's best and most likable leading ladies, who are heroes in their own right, as they refuse to allow anyone to undermine their skills or place in the hospital.

They also offer each other words of encouragement whenever the other is having doubts over certain surgery approaches. It is friendships such as these that blossom in the most beautiful ways.
