Batman ‘89 Preview Highlights Marlon Wayans’ Robin Costume

DC Comics and artist Joe Quinones have released a set of new looks at Marlon Wayans' Robin in the upcoming Batman '89 comic series. It's been made very clear that one of the main goals behind Batman '89 is to revive fan-favorite aspects of the Tim Burton Batman movies, but also to resurrect unused concepts. One of those scrapped ideas is Robin, who was originally slated to appear in the Burtonverse.

Before production began on Batman Returns, Tim Burton had cast actor Marlon Wayans to portray the iconic Boy Wonder. But due to an already overcrowded cast of characters, Robin was subsequently cut from the film. To this day, fans of Burton's Batman films still wonder what Wayans' Robin would have been like. Those questions will soon be answered as the release of Batman '89 nears close. Fans have known for a while that Marlon Wayans' Robin will appear in the new series, thanks to series artist Joe Quinones' regular teases via Twitter. Last week, in anticipation of DC's upcoming press release, Quinones posted an early-stage sketch of Robin.

DC Comics has released a full look at Robin's costume in Batman '89, as part of its first look at the miniseries. Quinones tweeted out a full-color close-up of the suit as well.  Robin's full costume, in Quinones' variant cover for issue one, is rather unconventional compared to past iterations. Wayans’ Robin sports a yellow face covering in place of the Boy Wonder’s normal eye mask. Additionally, Quinones’ version of Robin has a hood attached to his cape and his weapon of choice is some sort of staff. It’s an interesting and inventive take on Robin.

Not a single piece of concept art was ever released of Wayans’ Robin, so it’s unclear if this new design is completely new or not. But it can be presumed that Quinones probably came up with the costume concept. It’s possible that Robin’s face mask is influenced by the events of this past year as it heavily resembles what most face masks look like. However, Quinones has embedded it into Robin’s look and it actually works very well. It doesn’t feel forced or out of the ordinary when it comes to superhero costumes.

It seems that Robin will play a huge part in Batman ‘89. Readers can infer this as Wayans’ Robin features in most of DC Comics’ promotion for the new miniseries. Michael Keaton’s Batman was seen as a solo act during the films, but as he gets older it looks like Robin will be a vital part of his journey to stop Gotham City’s criminals. The miniseries will continue where Batman Returns left off, picking up with characters new and old in the mid-nineties. Batman ‘89 #1 will be available to purchase digitally on August 10.
