DWTS: Derek Hough Wants TikTok Star Charli D'Amelio to Compete On Show

Professional dancer-turned-judge Derek Hough would love to see Tik Tok star Charli D'Amelio compete in the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars. Last fall, the dancing competition was forced to make changes to the show due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amongst the changes was DWTS star Derek signing on as a judge rather than competing on the dance floor since Len Goodman was unable to travel to the United States.

Despite the many changes suddenly brought onto the show, DWTS season 29 ultimately turned out to be quite successful for ABC, so much so that the show was nominated for five Emmy Awards. These five nominations were a part of ABC's 23 overall nominations. Amongst them, Derek will be competing against fellow professional dancer Artem Chigvintsev for best choreography. Both of the dancers' nominations are based off of dances performed last season.

Now the Dancing With The Stars team is preparing for the show's milestone 30th season. As Derek heads back to the judges' panel for a second season in a row, he, like the fans, is already making predictions of who he would like to see in the ballroom this fall. Derek revealed during an interview with Hollywood Life which TikTok stars he would love to see take on the dancing competition. With no surprise, Derek responded, "I think it’d be really cool to see one of the D’Amelio sisters on there." He continued on to admit that of the two sisters, Charli would more than likely take on the challenge as she is already a "really talented dancer." Not only that, but Charli is also "crushing it in the content, TikTok world," according to Derek. The D'Amelio sisters are best known for their presence on social media; however, Charlie and Dixie recently landed their own show on Hulu.

Bringing on a contestant who has past experience in dancing is always a controversial topic amongst longtime viewers of the show. Many believe it to be an unfair advantage since these stars typically succeed right from the start of the competition; however, Derek thinks otherwise. He claims that having past experience in dance is not actually an advantage on the show. Derek said, “If you want to be a high-quality dancer, nothing will ever replace training." He continued on to note that the long hours spent inside the studio, practicing the same routine over and over alongside mentors, is mandatory in order to succeed on the show. At the end of the day, it is not about what a star did in their past; it is about what they are doing throughout the season to help them succeed and ultimately win the Mirrorball Trophy. On top of that, these contestants never know what twists and curveballs the DWTS judges may throw their way to make the journey even more challenging.

Although dance experience is not a huge advantage in Derek's eyes, popularity is. Fan votes play a large role in the elimination process of the show. Not only is Charli already a good dancer, but she also has a very large social media following, which would help her succeed on the show as well. If Charli did take on the dancing competition, the 17 year old TikTok star would not actually be the youngest star to compete on the show. She would, however, have a chance at winning Dancing With The Stars during the show's milestone 30th season.
