Louis Vuitton is offering a UFO-shaped portable smart speaker featuring high quality surround sound and an even higher price tag. The speaker boasts a wealth of up-to-date internals including numerous extra accessories, but those willing to spend the asking price will need to wait a little longer before they can get their hands on one. French designer house Louis Vuitton was making high-fashion tech accessories long before Apple's AirTag and its luxury accessories burst onto the scene.
Established more than 160 years ago, Louis Vuitton has released quite an eclectic range of tech-related products alongside its usual fashion apparel during the past decade. Its iconic “LV” branding made its way to various officially-licensed tech items, from luxury phone cases to even mouse pads that cost hundreds of dollars. Last year, Louis Vuitton released the Horizon earphones, a pair of luxury true-wireless earbuds costing over $1,000, and now it's hoping to expand the lineup with something that's pricier than most high-end speakers on the market.
Louis Vuitton's Horizon Light Up speaker sports a rigid metallic frame along with leather accents adorned with its signature “LV” and monogram flower icons. Despite its uncanny resemblance to an alien spacecraft, the design is actually based on the company's Toupie handbag. The speaker features 360-degree audio, quick USB-C to USB-C charging, a tempered glass touch control bar and a rotating volume control knob, all coupled with an exorbitant $2,890 price tag. The package also includes a charging dock, leather wrist-strap and travel pouch. The Horizon Light Up is available to purchase through the Louis Vuitton website, but those placing an order today will have to wait until between July 31 and the end of August for the speaker to ship.
The Horizon Light Up speaker functions like other popular smart speakers, such as Apple's HomePod mini and Amazon's Echo, but with a built-in battery for added portability. It's equipped with three microphones to assist with calls and voice commands, and utilizes Qualcomm's mid-range QCS404 chip. Compared to some of the best-sounding portable speakers available today, Louis Vuitton's offering actually comes with better wireless connectivity due to the Bluetooth 5.1 support.
While its 15-hour playtime is lengthy enough, it still falls short of competitors like Treblab FX100's 35-hour battery or the JBL Charge 4's 20 hours, especially considering it costs over $2,500 more. The Horizon Light Up isn't advertised as waterproof either, as it doesn't come with any IP rating. Of course, these speakers put style at the forefront and are aimed towards a specific clientele, so having any sort of rugged features might not exactly fit its target market. It will be interesting to see if the quality of Louis Vuitton's Horizon speakers actually delivers, or if it will end up disappointed customers similar to the reportedly flimsy luxury AirTag accessories.
