From franchise staples such as Princess Peach and Yoshi to newcomers like Chargin’ Chuck and King Bob-omb, Mario Golf: Super Rush was released on June 25th with a lackluster roster of characters. With only 17 playable golfers at launch, the game received criticism from fans who wanted more content.
While some fans are dissatisfied that some of their beloved characters were initially excluded, others are hopeful that Nintendo’s promise of future DLC will add some of their favorites to the game. There are still many Nintendo icons left out of the character lineup that would make worthy additions to the game.
10 Link
After the roster to Mario Golf: Super Rush was revealed, one of the most requested characters to be added was Link from The Legend of Zelda franchise. More popular than ever due to the continued success of Breath of the Wild and the recent reveal of the game’s long-awaited sequel, Link would attract more players to Mario Golf and satisfy diehard Nintendo fans as well.
Link isn’t a stranger to competing against Mario. He made a memorable appearance in Mario Kart 8 with Hyrule Castle serving as a racing circuit complete with collectible Rupees and menacing Deku Babas.
9 Samus Aran
Like Link, Samus is immensely popular with Nintendo and video game fans alike. That popularity has only increased with the recent announcement of Metroid Dread, the first original 2D Metroid game in nearly 20 years.
Not only would Samus entice Metroid fans to play golf with Mario and his friends, she would also bring a unique set of skills and powers to the game. Her alien/human agility and Power Suit would be extremely useful in the game’s new Speed Golf mode, which pits golfer against golfer in a race to see who can complete the course first.
8 Isabelle
Everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic Shih Tzu surprisingly didn’t make Mario Golf’s initial roster. A staple of the Animal Crossing franchise, Isabelle first made an appearance in a Mario property with Super Smash Bros. for the DS/Wii before becoming a fan favorite when she hit the tarmac in Mario Kart 8.
It only makes sense to include Isabelle, who fits right into the all-ages aesthetic that Mario Golf expertly creates. For her special dash attack, Isabelle can use her Balloon Trip move from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and float above the course to retrieve her golf ball or beat her opponents in the Speed Golf mode.
7 The Inklings
Splatoon’s humanoid squids the Inklings are relatively new to appearing in Mario games. With appearances in Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, they’ve quickly proven to be popular with fans due to their distinctive brand of splattered ink mayhem.
The Inklings could add a dose of power and variety to the special shots that are a hallmark of Mario Golf. They could transform their signature splattershot gun into a splattershot golf club that could distract opponents with its colorful ink.
6 Birdo
Birdo has a history of appearing in Mario sports games, having first been featured in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and later in Mario Golf: World Tour. It’s logical they would tee up for the latest round of Mario Golf. Instead of shooting eggs from their snout, Birdo could project golf balls on the course and fireballs for when they miss a hole.
In addition, Birdo’s presence would also diversify the roster. Considered by some to be the first transgender video game character, the pink hued Birdo would add a dose of inclusive color to the lineup that is best exemplified by the rainbow they emit when they achieve a nice shot.
5 Wart
Another Super Mario Bros. 2 character that is long overdue for a comeback is Wart. Originally the main villain in the 1988 sequel to Super Mario Bros., Wart has all but disappeared from video games, appearing sporadically in such games as The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
Subcon’s former ruler would stand out as perhaps the only oversized frog with a crown and robe on the playing field. Wart’s special shot could draw on his bubble shooting ability, which could be used to interrupt his opponents as they try to sink a hole-in-one.
4 Cranky Kong
When the character roster was first announced for Mario Golf: Super Rush, some players were dismayed to see only Donkey Kong representing the Kong family. Where was Diddy, Dixie or Funky Kong?
While any additional Kongs would be welcome, there’s one Kong that would make a perfect addition to Mario Golf: Cranky Kong. Golf is frequently played by senior citizens so he should have a built-in high skill level. Also, his cane can serve as a functional golf club that he can use to hit golf balls on whatever course he is playing on.
3 Toadette
Toadette is one of the most utilized yet underrated characters in the entire Mario franchise. With over two dozen appearances, Toadette is a Mario franchise staple whose exclusion from Mario Golf: Super Rush feels wrong.
Toadette was one of the weaker characters to play in Mario Golf: World Tour so a return to another Mario Golf game would offer the opportunity to do right by her character.
2 Fox McCloud
While Fox McCloud has appeared in several Mario games over the years, he has never challenged Mario in a competitive sports game.
Mario Golf: Super Rush is the perfect opportunity to right that wrong. With signature moves such as the Fox Illusion and the Wolf Flash, Fox would bring devastating power and blinding speed to the competition just like he did in the Super Smash Bros. video games.
1 Pikachu
While seemingly unlikely, the idea that Pikachu could be included in Mario Golf: Super Rush isn’t that far-fetched upon reflection. He’s appeared alongside Mario in the Super Smash Bros. series, where his devastating Thunder Jolt and Quick Attack moves have won him plenty of battles. Those moves could be as equally useful in the game, where speed and guile are amply rewarded.
In addition, Pokémon has a massive fan base that consumes everything from trading cards to video games. It’s only logical Pikachu’s fans would follow him to the tranquil green courses of Mario Golf: Super Rush.
