In Marvel Comics’ new Heroes Reborn timeline, Loki finally receives the death he has always deserved. Reminiscent of DC Comics’ most famous team of superheroes the Justice League, the Squadron Supreme is a replacement team for the Avengers in this new corner of the Marvel multiverse. Many of the original Marvel heroes still exist in the new reality and some are beginning to remember the world that is seemingly lost and the people they used to be.
In Heroes Reborn #6 by Jason Aaron, Erica D’urso, and Jason Keith, Power Princess, Marvel’s version of Wonder Woman, Power Princess, fights a god-killing monster named Mangog. Mangog is currently going by the newly earned title of ‘All-Gog’ after decimating and devouring Asgard and all of its residents. All-Gog plans to do the same with Power Princess, but the Utopian seems to have a few tricks up her sleeve, ones that end up in All-Gog’s stomach. The goddess’ most powerful weapons are her gauntlets which operate similarly to Thor's Mjolnir in that they come when she calls and nothing can stop them. Power Princess shoves the gauntlets down All-Gog’s throat and calls upon them to rip through his stomach, killing the cosmic powerhouse.
While Power Princess was successful in killing All-Gog, she was too late to do so before the god-eater delivered a cruel yet most deserving fate to the god of mischief. Mangog’s purpose as established in the 616 Marvel timeline and seemingly carried over to the Heroes Reborn is to punish gods who break cosmic rules. Loki’s entire existence has basically been defined by not following the rules and causing mischief. Laufeyson’s comic career thus far has seemingly been leading to a moment where he would pay for the chaos he has brought upon the world, and Heroes Reborn delivers that universal retribution in the most brutal way.
In earning the new title of ‘All-Gog’, Mangog eats all of the gods in Asgard and boasts about his feast to Power Princess in an effort to intimidate her. One of the gods the great devourer brags about eating is none other than Loki himself. “The one with the pretty horns was a foul brew of black magic and Jotunn’s blood. Gave me the squirts something fierce.” Based on All-Gog’s description of the Loki dine-in experience, it seems the god of mischief at least put up a fight both before and after the meal.
While Loki reigns supreme in the streaming world with his all-new Disney+ series Loki, this latest chapter in the Marvel Comics’ universe leaves the lovable villain devoured off-panel by a cosmic beast. It was clear by Loki’s reaction upon watching his own death at the hands of Thanos in the first episode of Loki that he was angry at how an alternate version of himself was killed. If Loki could have witnessed his end at the hands of Mangog, he would have assuredly been more disgusted and absolutely horrified than angry. While the picture painted in one's mind at the brutal end Loki must have faced is vile, it is a death the god of mischief has brought upon himself through years of villainy, and one Loki has always deserved.
