A plethora of theories regarding human bluepills surrounds The Matrix 4, which will most likely pick up right after the events of Revolutions. Being one of the most anticipated movies of 2021, The Matrix 4 will be released on HBO Max the same day it hits theatres. While it is still not certain how this sequel fits into the franchise, The Matrix 4 is slated to bring back some of the original trilogy stars, including Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Apart from them, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas will also star.
Right at the heart of The Matrix franchise lies the choice between the red pill and the blue pill, with the former canonically being associated with breaking through the illusory nature of simulated reality. Since the entire premise of the trilogy hinges upon Neo’s choice to give up the dream world of the matrix in favor of the cruelties of reality, the red pill is a metaphor for free will. However, with The Matrix 4, the focus might shift to the other choice in question, the blue pill, which is akin to a beautiful prison designed to confine and subjugate humans, and craft an existence steeped in ignorance.
While the Machines have been presented as antagonists throughout the trilogy, Neo’s truce with them at the end of Revolutions makes them unlikely to be a direct threat to the Resistance in The Matrix 4. Although a chasm in the status quo might ignite an all-out war between the two factions, an increasing number of human bluepills since Neo’s sacrifice might become the source of conflict in the sequel. A seminal example of this sentiment is Cypher, who was originally part of Morpheus’ crew aboard the Nebuchadnezzar. Although Cypher had chosen the red pill, he grew increasingly disillusioned with the cruel nature of reality and the constant tussle for survival. This caused Cypher to betray Neo and crew in The Matrix, as a part of the deal he had cut with Agent Smith in exchange for returning to the comforts of the matrix.
While Cypher might appear to be an exception, this is not the case, as his betrayal triggered the onset of a cult of sorts, which is based on his beliefs about reality. This group, who call themselves Cypherites, were featured heavily in The Matrix Online game, wherein they were vehemently against the idea of awakening humans within the matrix to the truth about the Machine War. Although Cypherites are redpills themselves, essentially allowing them to break free from the control of the machines, they mobilized over the years to thwart the redpill movement and infiltrate the city of Zion. However, as The Matrix lore posits that there is no known way to reinsert an awakened human back into the matrix, the Cypherites found themselves disillusioned in terms of purpose.
As Neo’s sacrifice would inevitably trigger a mass awakening in humans, it is not entirely improbable many would find this transition harrowing, preferring the sweet lull of the illusory world instead. Loss of identity and abrupt change can often be motivators for extremist ideologies, potentially urging these redpills to align with Cypher’s ideology. Could this cult be led by someone like Neil Patrick Harris’ mysterious character, who might wish to further his own agenda by benefiting from yet another war? Moreover, as Neo is definitely set to return in The Matrix 4, the status quo between the Resistance, the Machines, and those wishing to choose the blue pill are bound to be disturbed.
