Perfect Dark's Skedar Could Be Causing The Climate Crisis (Theory)

The Perfect Dark reboot trailer shows a distraught world of severe ecological turmoil, and it's a safe bet the Skedar are behind it. Not many details have been released so far, but in keeping with the original game's sci-fi/action narrative, it's hard to imagine dropping the interstellar war between the Skedar and Maians. Perfect Dark's Skedar proved to be a ruthless enemy, looking to destroy both the Maian's homeworld and the Earth itself. With the reboot's focus on widespread ecological disaster, Perfect Dark seems to have a more evolved theme of extraterrestrial control than its predecessor.

2000's Perfect Dark saw the Skedar ally themselves with the DataDyne Corporation. Promising advanced technology so DataDyne could reach the top of the corporate industry, the Skedar asked for a complex AI capable of cracking a mysterious alien code. They sought out a world-destroying weapon of alien design which had crashed into the ocean, and they hoped to use it on the Maian homeworld to win the war, secretly intending to use it on Earth first to make sure it worked. While such a simple plot may have been effective for the original sci-fi/action spy thriller, today's more complex game requires a much more villainous enemy. Having the Skedar cause the climate crisis in Perfect Dark's reboot would certainly fit their history, motives, and advanced technology.

Flooding, hurricanes, and rampant fires have broken out across the world of Perfect Dark. In the wake of destruction, corporations rose to power by supplying the people with everything they needed to survive. They not only prospered but thrived off of the cataclysmic events taking place. The Perfect Dark reboot trailer depicts a city not quite crumbling, but struggling, and at the center of it all is the pristine DataDyne tower. Much like their goal in the original game, DataDyne has clearly managed to reach the top of the corporate industry, and it is at this point the narrator says "but the laws of nature aren't meant to be broken," implying their involvement in manipulating the harsh weather patterns for their own means.

It's entirely plausible that a similar deal has been struck between DataDyne and the Skedar in Perfect Dark's reboot as in the original game. It is likely that the Skedar have come to Earth once again to find (or test) a weapon to use against their Maian adversaries, but have allied with DataDyne to accomplish the final piece of the puzzle. DataDyne may have agreed to help in exchange for the Skedar enacting worldwide devastation through severe climate conditions - a very relevant topic these days - which makes for a greater narrative. Doing so puts Perfect Dark's DataDyne into a stronger position of power as the people turn to them for help, regardless of the destruction being caused to the planet. If the Skedar are controlling Earth's climate to cause global devastation, and doing so only to gain greater power, this makes humanity look even smaller against such a powerful adversary. They would be causing global strife not out of malice or intent of domination, but as a means to an end.

There isn't enough information about Perfect Dark's reboot available yet to be sure, but given the game's previously established lore it's hard to imagine pushing aside the Skedar in favor of a more terrestrial enemy. Players need an enemy that is truly imposing, and the Skedar are a perfectly intimidating threat. Using accelerated climate change as a focal point for the narrative would certainly grab gamers' attention far greater than the traditional alien invasion angle, and fans of the original game would no doubt love to see Perfect Dark's Skedar updated with modern graphical enhancements.
