MJ Rodriguez received her first Emmy nomination for Pose as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista and became the first transgender woman nominated for a Lead acting Emmy. The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced, with major support for many shows, including The Boys, WandaVision, and Ted Lasso.
Per Variety, MJ Rodriguez makes history as the first transgender performer to receive an Emmy nomination in a major acting category, receiving it in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Rodriguez is only the third transgender performer to receive an acting nomination, with Laverne Cox getting her first nomination for Orange Is the New Black in 2014 and Rain Valdez getting a nomination as an actress in the short form category last year for Razor Tongue. Rodriguez is nominated alongside Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin for The Crown, Uzo Aduba for In Treatment, Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid's Tale, and Jurnee Smollett for Lovecraft Country.
Pose had another outstanding performance at the awards. The show received its second nomination for Outstanding Drama Series and Billy Porter scoring his third consecutive Emmy nomination for lead actor. Porter took home the award for Pose's first season in 2019.
The nomination for Rodriguez is a significant breakthrough for the representation of trans performers and the LGBTQIA-plus community. While Pose ended its run after three seasons, it has broken much ground for its storytelling about the drag ball culture. It provides insight and outlet for the African and Latino trans and gender-nonconforming community. With Pose being nominated for its final season, it is the Television Academy's only chance to reward the series. Should Rodriguez win, she would make history again as the first trans performer with an Emmy Award.
