While fans know the Blue Blur by the name Sonic the Hedgehog, several incarnations of the character have revealed this is actually a superhero-style codename based on Sonic's powers. That was certainly the case in the now discontinued Archie Comics series, with lead writer Ken Penders taking the opportunity of the pilot issue of the original miniseries to reveal at least part of Sonic's civilian name.
Archie Sonic Miniseries #0 contains two separate stories introducing the Sega character for the first time in comics. The story that reveals Sonic's true name is actually a flashback that covers the first time he met Dr. Robotnik, when his beloved Uncle Chuck and dog Muttski were roboticized. Before Robotnik performs the horrific procedure on his family, the evil scientist lures the Blue Blur away by ordering 200 chili dogs from Charles' chili dog stand, and Sonic graciously helps his uncle by delivering them himself. Not only does Sonic receive no payment for the order, but he soon finds that Uncle Chuck and Muttski were roboticized during his delivery and is unable to snap them out of it.
As Sonic spies on Dr. Robotnik's lab, he stumbles across Princess Sally Acorn, who attempts to help the hedgehog as he tries to revive his afflicted family members. Sonic later reveals his middle name to Sally (and the world) during a particular moment of their mission that requires them to move quickly. Sally tells Sonic that she hopes he can keep up with her, to which he responds by saying that his middle name is "Speed" before adding, "Actually, it's Maurice. But don't tell anyone, okay?"
Sonic's true middle name is also mentioned again much later in issue #53 of the regular series after the Freedom Fighters have vanquished Dr. Robotnik. Sonic and his friends are surveying the wreckage of his base when Sonic's father Jules begins calling out for his son by using Sonic's middle name, Maurice, much to the amusement of his friends and comrades. Sonic also has a true first name, but he shuts down discussion before it can be revealed in issue 53. A popular fan rumor has it that Penders used his personal website to reveal he intended it to be 'Ogilvie.' This would make Sonic's true name Ogilvie Maurice the Hedgehog.
Although some fans have decried Sonic's real name, all of this was just one of the many ways in which Ken Penders and Archie Comics added more depth to an otherwise two-dimensional character and universe, much like how they had been initially portrayed in the Sega Genesis games. Though now defunct, the Archie Comics series was deeply interested in who characters were before the modern day depicted in the games, even giving Sonic's world itself a bizarre backstory involving aliens and mutations that technically made Sonic the Hedgehog part human.
