Stephen Colbert Finally Stumped By Lord Of The Rings Trivia Question

Stephen Colbert failed to answer a Lord of the Rings question correctly on Tuesday night's episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The episode of the talk show featured Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd as guests, who played the hobbits Merry and Pippin in Peter Jackson's big-screen adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books. Colbert is a massive fan of Tolkien's work, having appeared in a cameo role as a Lake Town spy in Jackson's prequel trilogy based on The Hobbit.

Monaghan and Boyd last played their hobbit characters in 2003's Return of the King, with the franchise due to return in a big-budget Amazon Original series later this year. Colbert's love of Lord of the Rings is well-known, including being able to read Elvish and beating Jackson's on-set Tolkien expert Philippa Boyens in a head-to-head quiz. Many stars of the movies have appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, including Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

During a segment on The Late Show, Colbert's knowledge of Tolkien's works was put to the test again by Monaghan and Boyd. After correctly identifying Ungoliant as the mother of Shelob, the great Spider who appears in Return of the King, in a question posed by Monaghan, Colbert failed to answer Boyd's question about the Entmoot in The Two Towers. When asked where the meeting of the talking tree-like Ents took place within Fangorn Forest, Colbert drew a blank and could not answer. Check out the video below:

Upon hearing that the correct answer was Derndingle, Colbert recognized the name. He made up for his mistake by answering a question posed by Peter Jackson himself via video call about the identity of the inventor of golf, according to Tolkien. He proudly declared that it was Bullroarer Took, an ancestor of Pippin, and was given a special prize by Monaghan: a pair of prosthetic ears he wore on set as Merry.

For those who thought Colbert's encyclopedic knowledge of Middle-earth was infallible, this will come as surprising news. But for the skeptics, Colbert's mental blank and visible frustration shows just how genuine a fan he is of Lord of the Rings. With Amazon's major series currently in production, it seems likely that Colbert will be taking a keen interest in the show's development with its cast likely to appear on The Late Show. It's also possible he'll be invited to make a cameo appearance, so viewers will have to be sure to keep their eyes peeled.
