James Gunn posted a new behind-the-scenes The Suicide Squad image of himself alongside Pete Davidson as Blackguard and Idris Elba as Bloodsport, with both characters sporting prison jumpsuits. Gunn's standalone sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad brings back some characters from David Ayer's 2016 movie, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. Gunn is also introducing new characters from DC comic book canon, including Robert du Bois, a.k.a. Bloodsport, a mercenary enemy of Superman with a bespoke technologically advanced suit, and Richard "Dick" Hertz, a.k.a. Blackguard, a less-than-intelligent mercenary who typically ends up foiling his schemes or dying through his stupidity.
The Suicide Squad will see Davidson's Blackguard and Elba's Bloodsport, alongside the rest of Task Force X, travel to the island of Corto Maltese to destroy a Nazi prison and laboratory - only to encounter a giant alien starfish named Starro. The inclusion of a giant alien starfish might give some clue to the movie's tone compared to 2016's Suicide Squad. The film boasts an eclectic cast, including Joel Kinnaman returning as Rick Flag, Peter Capaldi as Gaius Greves, a.k.a. The Thinker, and Slyvester Stallone as King Shark. The latter also recently shared his own behind-the-scenes photo with co-star John Cena as Peacemaker. The film will be released in theatres and on HBO Max on August 5.
Gunn has been releasing new behind-the-scenes pictures from The Suicide Squad's promotional tour in the run-up to the movie's release. Gunn leans on Davidson in his latest photo as the Saturday Night Live actor puts his arm around Gunn's shoulder. In the post, Gunn praises Davidson as a "remarkable talent" who he "felt a great affinity with," despite his "werewolf phobia," the latter a reference to a joke seen in the latest "leaked" The Suicide Squad trailer. The BTS photo shows Elba in the background, dressed in the same orange prison jumpsuit as Davidson, during a break in filming. The full post can be seen below:

The orange prison jumpsuits both Davidson and Elba are wearing suggest the photo was taken during the shooting of scenes before Task Force X are sent on their mission. It's unclear how big Blackguard's role in the film will be due to the character in the comic being relatively unknown. The trailers and TV spots have shown Davidson demonstrate the comedic skills he's known for on Saturday Night Live, so it might be that Blackguard is being played primarily as comic relief. Bloodsport, however, appears to be one of the film's protagonists, as the trailers tease an intense father-daughter drama storyline and Waller picks him to lead The Suicide Squad on their mission.
Early reviews for the movie are positive, with the ensemble cast, stylized violence, and humor garnering praise. By bringing in new characters and leaving out some of the more divisive ones from Suicide Squad, such as Jared Leto's Joker, Gunn might have set The Suicide Squad franchise on a less divisive course. And with the Peacemaker TV spin-off on the way, it seems Warner Bros. is optimistic about how wider audiences will receive Gunn's vision.
