Why Forgemaster Isaac From Netflix's Castlevania Deserves A Spinoff

Forgemaster Isacc was one of the best characters on Netflix's Castlevania and deserves his own spinoff series. Konami's Castlevania is a classic series of action games that debuted during the 1980s. Most entries see players brave the walls of Dracula's labyrinth castle and slaying waves of enemies like zombies, werewolves, demons and just about every other kind of monster with a whip or other weapons. Various titles have shaken up the formula but that's the core concept, and it's resulted in some fantastic games.

A live-action movie of Castlevania was in development during the 2000s, with James Wan and Paul W.S. Anderson both attached as directors at different points. That project ultimately didn't happen, and given the general reputation of video game to movie adaptations, followers of the series were probably glad. The game was eventually adapted into a Netflix series, which landed on the platform in 2017. This show exceeded all expectations by being a genuinely great fantasy action series with likable characters, plus solid writing and colorful animation.

Netflix's Castlevania humanized both the humans and the monsters and made it possible to sympathize with both. Perhaps the best display of this duality was Isaac, who was introduced in season 2 as one of two human forgemasters - alongside Hector - who creates "Night Creatures" to serve Dracula. Isaac holds a deep rotted hatred for humanity and all it represents after suffering a lifetime of abuse and fully backs Dracula's plan to wipe out mankind. Dracula later saves Isaac in the season finale, and the character goes on a journey of self-discovery that was one of the most fascinating of the series. The final season saw him decide to use his powers for good by defeating vampire Carmilla, and he'd make a great character for a spinoff.

Castlevania season 4 concluded the story of heroes Trevor, Sypha and Alucard, and a forthcoming spinoff will focus on Richter Belmont during the French Revolution in 1792. This is over 300 years on from the events of the main series and shows that Netflix is committed to expanding Castlevania in new directions. That said, a spinoff focusing on Isaac following season 4 is brimming with potential. The Adetokumboh M'Cormak voiced character evolved from villain to anti-hero who, after encountering both the best and worst of mankind, decided to forge (pun somewhat intended) his own path than be part of someone else's.

Exactly what that path entails could make for a great starting point for a Castlevania spinoff. Season 4 ends with Isaac at the beginning of his journey towards reclaiming his own agency and discarding revenge as a worthy cause. Would a spinoff see him travel the land helping people rebuild in the aftermath of Dracula's war, or stopping other enterprising vampires like Carmilla from taking advantage of the chaos? He may have moved on from vengeance but he still has some way to go towards trusting mankind again too, which is another angle such a spinoff could explore. Isaac remains one of the best additions to Castlevania, so it would be a shame if Netflix didn't explore the next chapter of his journey.
