The Pokémon fandom is one of the most active and passionate. They constantly engage in discussions and contribute to the overall community. Fan-made Pokémon, or Fakemon, are a crucial part of this engagement. Creating new Fakemon is a way for fans to express their individuality while honoring the franchise they love.
Many of these Fakemon are so good that they look like they came straight out of one of the games. Thanks to their design, concept, inspiration, and lore, these Fakemon would look right at home next to the real Pokémon, a true testament to the endless possibilities that Pokémon provide.
10 Liberon
Dog-like Pokémon are present in every region and are among the most beloved creatures in the franchise. Pokémon like Growlithe, Rockruff, and Yamper stand out because of their cuteness, while their evolutions shine thanks to their strength. Artist Sayaka Yamaguchi gives her own interpretation of a canine Pokémon with Liberon, and it's a resounding success.
There seems to be a disconnect between the first stage, Bower, and its two evolutions. However, Liberon is such an imposing and well-designed Pokémon that it's easy to forgive. The Electric elements dominate the concept, from the bolt-like eyebrows to the spiky and elongated tail. The Fighting-type is still present, though, in Liberon's proud pose and fierce essence. Overall, Liberon looks like a real Pokémon, although it would probably be pure Electric-type in the franchise.
9 Violamantis
Redditor Confused_EWE posted their Fakemon, the regal Violamantis. As the name suggests, it draws inspiration from violins and mantis and can create music using the hidden strings under its arms. Violamantis is also one of those Pokémon with unique evolution methods. Its pre-evolution, Larpupil, evolves when it hears a beautiful melody.
Violamantis is a distinctively feminine Pokémon, thanks to its long flowy skirt. It has the same regal quality that makes Pokémon like Gardevoir Milotic so striking while still feeling unique enough to have a place in the Pokémon world. Add an instantly captivating color scheme and a one-of-a-kind concept, and Violamantis becomes practically irresistible.
8 Owlpera
The Normal-type gets a bad reputation. Many players look down on Normal Pokémon, considering them uninteresting at best and useless at worst. However, Fakemon artist an_artist_astray proves these notions wrong with the impressive and alluring Owlpera.
Based on masked owls and Sichuan opera singers, Owlpera is a gimmicky Pokémon, but what a gimmick. Thanks to its Ability, Face Swap, Owlpera can change its mask every turn, with each new one lowering a different stat from the opponent. If that wasn't enough, Owlpera's design successfully integrates both parts of its concept, resulting in a Pokémon that looks both appealing and mysterious and would make a perfect addition for any playthrough team.
7 Silvyx
The Fairy-type revolutionized the Pokémon franchise, quickly becoming one of the most visually distinctive. Pink and fluff are prevalent in Fairy Pokémon, and Deviant Smiley-Fakemon perfectly applies them to Silvyx, his Bug/Fairy Fakemon.
Silvyx, the silk Pokémon, have intense appetites and pose a threat to berry farmers. Their thick fur makes them ideal tanks with unparalleled defensive qualities. Silvyx is a triumph design-wise, taking a basic moth-like shape and enhancing it with the Fairy-type's trademark candy-coating. It might not be convenient in a battle, but boy is it pretty!
6 Tofrug
Lockstin and Gnoggin, one of the most popular PokéTubers out there, created the ridiculously adorable Tofrug as part of his fan-made Pokémon region, Kaskade. This cutie takes inspiration from the Tōfu-kuzō, a yokai that tricks people into eating dangerous tofu, often decorated with a leaf.
As such, Tofrug is a block of tofu that came to life in the form of a frog. It carries a maple leaf on its back, adding a sense of whimsy to its already charming design. Tofrug has everything that characterizes the cutest Pokémon: big expressive eyes, minimal facial features, short limbs, and a sense of mischief. Plus, its type combo of Poison/Fairy makes it all the more special.
5 Menhiss
Truegreen7 is another PokéTuber who enjoys creating Fakemon. An artist at heart, Ron is currently developing his own Pokémon region, Asone. In his videos, Ron chronicles the entire process of Fakemon creation, from the inspiration and concept to the actual design. For Menhiss, Ron drew inspiration from rattlesnakes and palm trees.
Menhiss has two forms, one green and lush found in tropical climates and one dry and nearly dead found in wintery forests. The green Menhiss, a dual Dragon/Grass-type, looks imposing and mighty, the perfect representation of both types. On the other hand, the dry form is the ideal Ghost/Grass-type and a fitting symbol for nature's cycles. Menhiss is the sort of Pokémon every player would want on their team, an impressive golem that embodies all the best parts of the franchise.
4 Valhalgon
Pokémon based on objects are divisive among fans of the franchise. Some think they are lazy and tired, while others consider them funny. It takes considerable creativity to turn an everyday object into a Pokémon successfully. Luckily, artist konau puts in the effort and comes out victorious.
Valhalgon is a dual Ghost/Dragon-type that would fit perfectly with all the other Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon. The artist takes the idea of a ghost ship and translates it into the Pokémon world, turning the ship itself into Valhalgon's body and using the oars as its legs. Valhalgon's lore is also compelling, acting as a carrier of deceased souls from our world into Valhalla.
3 Stormglide
The idea of an electric bird is not foreign to Pokémon. For example, Generation I introduced Zapdos, the poster child for electric birds in the franchise. Still, there's plenty of material yet to exploit with this concept, leading many Fakemon artists to revisit it.
Artist EJ, the creator of the fan-made Zorneo region, offers his interpretation of an electric bird with Stormglide, a dual Electric/Flying-type. Stormglide takes inspiration from many sources, including glider jets and Ziggie Stardust himself, David Bowie. Its design expertly combines elements from both types while still allowing it to have individuality. Stormglide looks like no other in the franchise; no doubt, it would become a fan-favorite and one of the best regional birds in Pokémon.
2 Bellsha
One of the best parts of designing Fakemon is creating new variants or evolutions for existing Pokémon. The confirmation that Hisuian forms will exist in Pokémon Legends: Arceus has artists coming up with their own variation of previous Pokémon.
Artist Tyree Boennemann proposes a new form for forgotten Generation II Grass-type, Bellossom. Bellsha is a dual Grass/Fighting-type that combines aspects of both Oddish and Gloom. Unfortunately, Tyree doesn't give much information about this new form in terms of lore or inspiration. However, the design speaks for itself. The flower hat is most likely a reference to a Japanese kasa, and the bamboo stick reminds of a samurai sword, fitting for a Fighting-type Pokémon.
1 Shroomajik
Grass-type might be one of the lamest types in Pokémon, but it sure has some of the prettiest mons. Case in point, this Fakemon creation from fan-made Pokémon project bayan_region, Shroomajik. This dual Grass/Psychic-type is very shy and will watch from a safe distance, vanishing when spotted.
Shroomajik wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Drawing elements from classic magicians and mushrooms, this Fakemon is both mysterious and endearing. Its color scheme blends Grass and Psychic perfectly, and its large, mushroom-like hat really makes the magic pop out. Shroomajik is the perfect example of a foreign concept translating seamlessly into the Pokémon world and further proof that there are no limits to the franchise's potential.
