Island customization is a large part of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which introduced extensive terraforming options and DIY recipes to allow for even more flexibility in player designs. Because of this, there are plenty of ways to make an island look more welcoming for visitors, whether those guests are other online players or just the town's many villagers. Here are some tips to help make a more friendly-looking town in Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons' multiplayer features currently allow up to eight players on an island at once. In addition to that, players can have 10 villagers living on their island. This can make things feel a bit cluttered at times, especially if players haven't done proper design work to accommodate a large number of characters at once. Leaks have suggested islands may be getting bigger, but nothing concrete has been announced yet.
Nintendo has at least said significant New Horizons content updates are coming in the near future. However, for the time being, the best option players have is to simply design around the knowledge that visitors will be greeted by a limited space.
Create An Easily Understandable Island Layout
One way to do this is to make the town easy to navigate. Buildings can be placed and moved directly in New Horizons, allowing for grid-like streets that could be accentuated with directional signs indicating what's where. This will let visitors easily figure out where they're going and avoid overwhelming them as soon as they step off the seaplane.
Dot The Island With Sitting Areas
Another idea is to place plenty of resting areas around the island: Particularly in Animal Crossing's summertime, swimming pools, parks, fountain plazas, and gardens can make visitors feel calm, as can coffee shops, orchards, and farms in the fall. If visiting players see villagers gathered around for a chat, they'll likely feel more like the island is a real community, as opposed to just a place for their friend to gather shells and fossils. This can also encourage them to split up and properly explore the island's scenery, looking for more interesting nooks to rest in. Even something like an outdoor concert hall could be a great way to encourage interactivity outside of Animal Crossing's typical gameplay features.
Host Island Giveaways With Extra Items
One more method to make an island appear more friendly is hosting giveaways. Duplicate items players don't have any use for can be dropped in a designated area, allowing visitors to pick them up. Villagers won't make use of these, meaning that they can safely be saved for friends from other islands. Rare Animal Crossing flowers can also be planted in a designated "take home" area, allowing visitors to dig them up if they're in need of hybrids. If placed next to the town's airport gateway, these giveaway areas will let any visitors know their Animal Crossing: New Horizons host is excited for them to be there.
