American Horror Story star Dylan McDermott teases that his Murder House character will return. McDermott has been with the AHS universe since the very beginning. He was one of the lead actor’s in the anthology’s first season, subsequently known as Murder House, which centered on the Harmon family. Moving to Los Angeles for a fresh start, the Harmons have no idea that they’re moving into a restored mansion filled with the ghosts of former residents.
Despite its anthology format, with each season of American Horror Story telling a different terrifying tale, McDermott has made a few guest appearances as Ben Harmon. Recently, he reprised his role in the season 1 finale of the spinoff American Horror Stories. The finale, titled “Game Over”, focuses on a mother who develops a video game inspired by AHS in an effort to connect with her son who is a fan of the show. McDermott now says that, despite the episode ending with Ben no longer existing as a ghost, there’s a good chance that he’ll be back.
In an interview with Comic Book, McDermott discussed his appearance in the season 1 finale of American Horror Stories. The actor expressed confidence that fans would be seeing Ben in the future. He also shed some doubt on the ending of “Game Over”, questioning which parts of the story were real and which others simply existed in the universe of the game created by Michelle. You can read McDermott’s quote below.
“I think we’re going to see Ben forever. I think Ben will always be caught in this endless loop. And that’s the thing with the ending. Is it a video game? Is it real life? The house burned down. Did the house burn down in the video game? What exactly happened? So there’s a chance that we will see him if indeed it was just a video game.”
It’s understandable that McDermott would express some uncertainty about the ending of American Horror Stories “Game Over.” The episode starts with the potentially interesting meta-story where fans of American Horror Story become trapped in Murder House. Then the anthology pulls back to reveal that the opening scene existed merely within a video game inspired by AHS. Then the narrative shifts once again, somehow making the case that the characters of AHS are actually part of the world. By the episode’s end, a final twist reasserts that nearly everything that transpired was simply an updated version of Michelle’s game. It’s a zigzagging plot that earned criticism for failing to hold up to the slightest bit of scrutiny. But, for fans of the series, and for those hoping to see Ben again, the ambiguous conclusion allows for the possibility that the infamous Murder House saga will be resurrected in the future.
Despite being on the air for a decade now, and despite the fact that it’s produced many memorable installments, season 1 of American Horror Story and its focus on the Murder House does seem to hold a special place in the estimation of fans. “Game Over” theorizes that this affinity relates to the fact that viewers hope that characters like Ben and the others doomed to live on as ghosts will be able to find some measure of peace. This hasn’t happened yet. But, at least in McDermott’s view, the door is wide open for further exploration down the road.
