The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t introduced mutants yet, but did Black Widow subtly hint at their presence and Natasha being one? The MCU has given its biggest heroes at least three solo movies, but it took the studio years to finally give Natasha Romanoff her own movie. The first (and most likely only) Black Widow movie arrived as part of the MCU’s Phase 4 and it solved many questions about Natasha’s past while also setting up a couple of things for the near future.
Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow follows Natasha as she’s on the run after the conflict between Team Captain America and Team Iron Man and returns to Russia. Once there, she reunites with her Russian family and comes across a villain known as Taskmaster, who has a strong link to Dreykov (Ray Winstone) and the Red Room. Black Widow gave full closure to Natasha’s time in the MCU as she died in Avengers: Endgame when she sacrificed herself in Vormir, but it left a couple of questions about her, such as who her real parents are and what made her so special to be taken to the Red Room – and the answer to that could introduce mutants into the MCU.
Before Black Widow came out, it was known that Natasha was taken to the Red Room for training. This was a top-secret Russian training program led by Dreykov and which took orphan girls to turn them into elite assassins (named “Black Widows”) through brainwashing, reprogramming, intense physical training, and more. What exactly is what Dreykov was looking for in each girl is unknown, but the way he talked about Natasha might hint at something big in the MCU. Young Natasha was chosen because of her genetic profile, which made her a great candidate for the Red Room program, but could that be because she had mutant genes?
Out of the many concepts, characters, and more that fans have been waiting to see in the MCU are mutants, and even though characters like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (who are mutants in the comics) have already been introduced, they were named “enhanced individuals” due to Disney not having the rights to use the term “mutant”. However, as Fox is now owned by Disney, the Mouse House can now use the word “mutant” but hasn’t done so yet. Mutants have been teased to be coming soon to the MCU, and Natasha could have been one of them, hence why she was chosen for the Black Widow program and became one of the best assassins to come from the Red Room.
Whether this was a subtle tease at the presence of mutants in the MCU or not is to be seen, but if true, this could be the biggest thing Black Widow sets up. Black Widow arrived too late in the MCU’s history as Natasha’s arc is now over, but if she turns out to be a mutant and that’s why Dreykov chose her, her solo movie would have a much bigger impact on the MCU and its future.
