Loki Honest Trailer Points Out Every Rick & Morty Similarity

The Honest Trailer for Loki riffs on the latest MCU streaming show, pointing out many of the show's unintentionally hilarious plot lines and moments. As the third Marvel Disney+ show, Loki was one of the most mysterious offerings from the mega-franchise. While WandaVision was clearly going to be a meditation on grief through the lens of sitcoms and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a passing of the Captain America torch to Sam Wilson, no one knew what to expect heading into Loki. The series itself picks up with the 2012 Loki Variant that escapes with the Tesseract during the Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame.

What begins as a comedy about bureaucracy and time travel quickly took everyone's favorite God of Mischief on an adventure the likes of which has never been seen before in the MCU. Tom Hiddleston's Loki meets a female Variant of himself, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and together the two try to take down the Time Variance Authority and find out who is behind the Sacred Timeline. Ultimately, it turns out that the answer is much more complicated than originally thought, with Loki introducing He Who Remains aka Kang the Conqueror in the season finale of the show before breaking the multiverse wide open.

Now, Screen Junkies has posted their Honest Trailer of Loki and they riff on just about everything in the show. From a montage showing everyone in the cast trying to make the word "prune" happen to wondering how long it would take viewers to fall in love with themselves, the trailer points out some of the unintentional hilarity of the show. It also points out that Loki is just one big prequel for the rest of the MCU's Phase 4, setting up Kang the Conqueror's role as the next major villain of the franchise as well as future projects like Loki season 2 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Check out the full video below:

One of the most controversial plot lines of Loki, and a big part of the trailer, is the relationship at the show's center. Di Martino says she knew the Loki and Sylvie romance would be divisive, but seeing as the show doesn't go too far with it, that conversation may crop up again when season 2 of Loki premieres. Still, that's the least of the trailer's concerns. A huge chunk of the video takes some time to point out the show's similarities to another time-hopping, multiverse-jumping show.

Loki's similarities to Ricky and Morty have been widely noted and it's safe to say that, to some degree, they're no accident. Head writer Michael Waldron left Rick and Morty to work on Loki and the show is arguably all the better for it. There's a reason Loki is Marvel's most celebrated Disney+ series yet and it's thanks to Waldron's blending of idiosyncratic humor and the deft characterization of one of Marvel's most beloved characters. The absurdity of the premise of the series mixed with the heart at its center makes the series truly unforgettable.
