As Batman's ally and a former Robin, Dick Grayson has been a superhero over eighty years. Like his mentor, he's seen more than his fair share of trauma lately. After being shot, losing his memory, experiencing the events of Joker War, and beyond, Dick Grayson is finally back to his old self battling the forces of evil in Blüdhaven.
Nightwing has evolved much since he was first introduced, but not always for the better. There have been many creative directions that fans disliked, while other readers support the more controversial Nightwing storylines.
10 Nightwing Should Join The Justice League
Nightwing has famously been part of the Teen Titans for many years. It was as a member of the team that he shed the Robin mantle and took his new name. While most fans agree that Dick works best as a Titan, a member of the Bat-Fam, or an independent agent, others like @Artseid on Reddit would like to see him take his place among "the Justice League, an equal among peers."
Some fans argue, however, that Nightwing wouldn't introduce any new dynamic that Batman doesn't already supply; the problem that should be resolved is elevating the Titans team closer to the Justice League's level. @DackeronStar countered, "Nightwing doesn't need to be in the JL to grow up. He must make his own way, not follow in Batman's footsteps."
9 Nightwing Won't Evolve As A Character
The unfortunate truth for many fans of former sidekicks, according to Reddit users such as @DefactoOverlord, is DC doesn't evolve "legacy characters in any meaningful way because it makes original characters look old." Nightwing and other heroes that started as sidekicks will always be perpetually stuck in their mentors' shadows.
It's a recurring theme for Dick to struggle with the idea of being a hero independent from Batman, but it seems that every time he makes headway he experiences a life-altering setback or the universe gets rebooted. It is unlikely readers will see Nightwing fully developed as long as he is continually regarded as Batman's former sidekick.
8 The Court of Owls Are Nightwing's Villain
The Court of Owls was introduced during Batman's New 52 run. It has been praised by many as one of the best modern Batman storylines and possibly one of the best Batman stories ever told. But considering the Court's ties to Dick Grayson, should they have been Nightwing's villain rather than another of Batman's foes? @Rogu3Wo1f on Reddit seems to think so, stating matter-of-factly that, "The Court of Owls are a Nightwing villain."
The Court of Owls physically and psychologically tormented Bruce, attempted to use him in their plot to control Gotham, and tried to turn Dick Grayson into Talon. But Dick Grayson battling his heritage and possibly becoming a Talon could have been a much more interesting storyline if it had been explored in Nightwing's New 52 saga.
7 New Order Is A Great Comic
Nightwing: New Order exists outside of DC's main continuity in an Elseworlds style alternate universe. It focuses on an older Dick Grayson who has given up the mantle of Nightwing. Dick was responsible for eliminating metahuman threats when he detonated a device that took away almost everyone's powers.
He ran an elite police force responsible for keeping the peace and tracking down and controlling the few beings who still had powers. The mini-series received mixed reviews, but @BEOKAYD on Reddit argues that it "was one of the best things to happen to the character... within the last few years."
6 Dick Grayson Should Permanently Become Batman
Dick Grayson has taken up the mantle of Batman on numerous occasions when Bruce Wayne has been indisposed, presumed dead, or actually dead. While fans on Reddit agree that Nightwing should wear the cowl on an interim basis, until Damian Wayne is old enough to accept it as his birthright, some think that Dick Grayson should retire his current title and officially take over for the Dark Knight. @janjos_ said, "I really like Nightwing, but Dick Grayson should be Batman, at least for a few decades. I'm tired of Bruce Wayne."
It's not unheard of for an original character's son or relative to take up their mantle, such as Wally West becoming the Flash, Connor Hawke inheriting the title of Green Arrow, or Jon Kent taking over as Superman. It is possible either Dick Grayson or Damian Wayne will become Batman permanently at some point in the future.
5 Kory Is The Love Of Dick's Life
As opposed to Barbara Gordon, Koriand'r - Starfire - is the true love of Dick Grayson's life according to some fans. While writers have historically paired Dick and Barbara together, readers find that Dick and Kory are a better match, especially their New Teen Titans variants by Wolfman and Pérez. @vjmurphy commented on Reddit, "I always liked the older Barbara/young Dick relationship in the old Batman Family comics... but Dick/Kory was always the best one."
Barbara and Kory represent different times in Dick's life. Barbara was his first love, but they were too similar and immature to last. Kory and Dick grew up together into heroes on the Titans team. They balance each other out as more mature, developed love interests making them better compliments.
4 Nightwing Needs A Sidekick
Dick was a sidekick for roughly forty years. He still fulfills the sidekick role when he is called upon to team-up with the Bat-Family. When Dick previously acted as Batman, Damian Wayne served as his Robin. But whether he is teaming up with Damian or another Robin, the Robins are still primarily Batman's sidekicks. Though Nightwing has grown into a hero in his own right, he has never had a consistent sidekick. @Artseid suggested on Reddit that Nightwing's sidekick could be "[named] Flamebird to match," tying in with the original history of Dick's title.
3 The New "Nightwings" Were A Good Team
When Dick Grayson was shot in the head by the KGBeast, he lost his memories and adopted the persona "Ric Grayson." He stopped going by "Nightwing," opting for a more violent, vigilante-esque approach to crime fighting. A group of new Nightwings took up the name and fought in Nightwing's stead. Fans' favorite was Hutch, also known as "Nightwing Red."
Readers agree that Hutch was the most well developed character of the new Nightwings and had the best dynamic with Ric. One Reddit user, @Tommyhanksy, thought that Hutch should stick around as a sidekick for Nightwing, "or Nightwing could start his own [group like Batman]."
2 Dick Should Have A Temper
Chuck Dixon's Nightwing run in the 1990s showcased a different side of Dick Grayson's character. Nightwing was still wholesome and kindhearted, but he had a temper. While Jason and Damian are known for being the hot-heads of the Bat-Family, @Son-of-the-Dragon suggested on Reddit that Dick's passion could easily translate to aggression. "Dick is generally a calm and collected person," he said, "but the right circumstances can cause him to have a volatile temper which is just as bad as, if not worse than, Jason or Damian." @_pirategold_ agreed that, "Dick's temper... brings another layer... He's often portrayed as Batman's second and he agrees with everything Batman believes... but by doing this his individuality and experiences get forgotten."
1 Dick Should Stay Single
Dick Grayson often faces the superhero conundrum of how to balance secret identities and personal lives. Unfortunately, he rarely manages both well, but that makes sense considering he learned most of his people skills from Batman. If Nightwing were to grow more and realize it was possible to have a serious relationship and be a hero, that would be one thing. But until then, @TowawayAccount on Reddit thinks that Dick should stay single, saying, "The issue is that he has the same hero complex as Batman. Dick tries so hard to be himself AND Nightwing. Unlike Bruce, he forges real bonds with people from his civilian life... Dick [keeps] flirting with people he feels a connection with only to tragically let them down at some point." It would be better for everyone if the former Boy Wonder stayed single until he learned to find a balance between his two identities.
