Skyrim is full of secrets and mysteries that players have spent years uncovering, but some Dragonborn may know know that one of the most difficult hidden bosses is also a reference to an earlier Elder Scrolls game. Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC embarks players on an adventure to Solstheim to battle Miraak, the First Dragonborn. It is here that players can summon Karstaag, a giant that first appeared in Blood Moon, a DLC from Morrowind. While Karstaag's body may have been destroyed, his soul lives on and can be summoned to face in combat.
In order to summon Karstaag in Skyrim, his skull must first be collected from the Glacial Cave located on the northern end of the island. The cavern will be filled with Riekling and other frost based enemies that will bar the way forward. Once the skull is secured, the Dragonborn must make their way to the Castle Karstaag Ruins and place it upon the throne. This will cause Karstaag to spawn in a ghostly form, and begin his boss fight.
Karstaag was originally slain in 3E 427 by the Nerevarine during the events of Morrowind. He once ruled over the Riekling tribes that lived in Castle Karstaag, serving as their king and protector. The Castle Karstaag Ruins somewhat resembles the area that Morrowind's protagonist defeated it in, complete with weathered architecture masked beneath the ice that has overtaken the territory. Veteran fans of Tamriel and the Elder Scrolls games will relish in the ability to revisit their old stomping grounds, while newer players will be able to appreciate a genuine challenge.
As an undead giant king, Karstaag is one of the most difficult bosses in Skyrim. He is a Level 90 foe and resists every type of damage except fire, meaning players will need to prepare every weapon they can. Karstaag is completely immune to frost, poison, and paralysis damage, eliminating a good portion of spells and Shouts that Dragonborns can use in Skyrim. The spectral frost giant can also deal powerful physical damage, with his stomp attack capable of sending players flying. These attacks paired with Karstaag's constant health regeneration makes him one of the most dangerous enemies in Skyrim.
Skyrim's giants are constantly sending players skyward, but most can be dealt with at a distance. This is also a strategy that can be applied to Karstaag's boss fight. Bows infused with fire enchantments will provide an opportunity for players to avoid most of Karstaag's attacks while dealing consistent damage. Fire spells such as Wall of Flames, Incinerate, Ignite, and Fire Storm are good ranged alternatives for mage-centric Dragonborn. Players can also make use of the Fire Breath Shout to inflict lasting damage against Karstaag before retreating out of range once more.
The spirit of Karstaag is one of the most difficult (and meaningful) bosses in Skyrim, paying homage to Morrowind and offering a significant challenge to players. Karstaag is not the only reference Bethesda makes to its other Elder Scrolls games in Skyrim, though it is certainly a touching callback to the actions of a dedicated playerbase. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is now a decade old, and receiving another port to next-gen consoles, possibly leading to more discoverable Easter eggs in the future.
