Pokemon Sword & Shield: 10 Best Areas To Explore For Grass-Types

Grass-type Pokémon have always been one of the most common Pokémon types throughout the entire franchise. Pokémon Sword & Shield is no different, with about 10% of all 400 Pokémon in the game being Grass-type.

But, because most locations can support Grass-type Pokémon, they usually are spread throughout the entire in-game map. Since the map in Pokémon Sword & Shield is large, it might be difficult to know where to look. To help with that, here are some locations that contain some of the best Grass-type Pokémon in the game.

10 Stepping-Stone Sea

One of the many locations added in the Isle of Armor expansion is Stepping-Stone Sea. This is one of many places throughout the game where the player can obtain the Grass-type Pokémon Applin by shaking a Berry Tree. Also, the player can randomly encounter Exeggcute here.

But, depending on whether the player has Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, the player can also shake the Berry Trees in this area to get one of Applin's evolved forms. In Pokémon Sword, Berry Trees at this location have a 10% chance to drop a Flapple, which is the version of Applin that evolves from a Tart Apple. Meanwhile, in Pokémon Shield, the Berry Trees will instead have a 10% chance to drop a Appletun, which is the version of Applin that evolves from a Sweet Apple.

9 Forest of Focus

The Forest of Focus is another area that is part of the Isle of Armor, and it also has some Grass-type Pokémon that the player may want to catch. Once again, the player can get Applin by shaking Berry Trees. But, the player also has a high chance of encountering the Grass/Poison dual-type Pokémon, Foongus. There is also a 16% chance that the player will find a Tangela. Formantis is the only Grass-type that is harder to find since there needs to be Harsh Sunlight in order for it to possibly appear.

Besides the random encounters, there are a couple of Grass-type wanderers in this area as well. These wanderers include Tangrowth, Amoonguss, and Lurantis, which are the evolved forms of Tangela, Foongus, and Formantis.

8 Bridge Field

As the part of the Wild Area that connects the north and south sections, Bridge Field has plenty of interesting Pokémon, which includes some Grass-types. Through random encounters, the player can find the Grass/Steel dual-type Ferroseed in this area. Also, if the weather is Harsh Sunlight, then the player may find the Grass-type Maractus. One of the best finds here, however, is Cherubi, which can be found by shaking Berry Trees.

If the player is struggling to find a Ferroseed or does not want to have to evolve the Ferroseed they have, then the evolved form of Ferroseed, Ferrothorn, does appear as a wanderer in this area as well.

7 Stony Wilderness

Near Bridge Field is another good location for some Grass-types in the Wild Area, Stony Wilderness. Bounsweet has a relatively high chance of being encountered by the player regardless of the weather. The other Grass-types at this location, however, require specific weather conditions. Maractus and Ferroseed both can be found in this area, but Maractus needs Harsh Sunlight and Ferroseed needs Blizzard.

But, the best part about this area is that Tsareena is one of the wanderers in this area, which is the final form of Bounsweet. With the specific conditions necessary to get to this form, it may be easier for the player to just catch this Pokémon here.

6 Ballimere Lake

As the location where the Mythical Pokémon Keldeo can be caught, Ballimere Lake has some good Grass-types to catch as well. The Grass/Fairy dual type Pokémon Cottonee can be randomly encountered here on clear and rainy days. Meanwhile, on clear days and days with Harsh Sunlight weather, players can randomly encounter Gossifleur.

Once again, however, the best part about this area is the wanderers. The player can find Whimsicott, the evolved version of Cottonee, and Eldegoss, the evolved version of Gossifleur.

5 Lake of Outrage

The Lake of Outrage, a location in the northern part of the Wild Area, can also be a place to find some particular Grass-types. Once again, Cherubi can possibly spawn when the player shakes a Berry Tree. The player can also find the Grass/Ice dual-type Pokémon, Abomasnow, when it is snowing in the area.

The greatest part about this area, however, is that this location is one of the two locations in the entire game where the player can encounter Leafeon, which is important to note for people who want to get all the Eevee evolutions. Also, the Grass/Fairy dual-type Pokémon, Shiinotic can also be found wandering in this area.

4 Giant's Bed

In an area filled with ruins, Giant's Bed has two Grass-type Pokémon that players do not want to miss. This area is the only other location that has a wandering Leafeon, so players who do not want to have to evolve their Eevees will need to go here or to the Lake of Outrage.

Even with an iconic Pokémon already listed, there is one more Pokémon that is even more important here. The Legendary Grass/Fighting dual-type Pokémon from Generation V, Virizion, is a wandering Pokémon in this area. This is a Grass-type Pokémon players should not want to miss.

3 Giant's Mirror

Giant's Mirror is another northern location in the Wild Area that has some good Grass-types. Cherubi is once again a Grass-type that's available if the player shakes some Berry Trees, but most of the other Grass-types in this area must be encountered during certain weather conditions. Players have a 20% chance of randomly encountering the Grass/Poison dual-type Pokémon Roselia while it is cloudy, and a 10% chance of encountering Roselia's pre-evolved form Budew when it's clear. Also, the player may randomly encounter an Applin during a thunderstorm, and may encounter Snover while it is snowing or when there is a Blizzard.

The player also has a high chance of encountering the Grass/Poison dual-type Pokémon Gloom during most types of weather, and the Grass/Fairy dual-type Morelull has a 35% chance of appearing during foggy weather. Along with all of that, the Grass-types Abomasnow, Vileplume, and Bellossom are wanderers in this area.

2 Hammerlocke Hills

Continuing with the northern Wild Area locations, Hammerlocke Hills has a couple of Grass-types that trainers should look for. Cherubi is once again possibly in the Berry Trees, and there is a 34% chance Maractus will appear in the Harsh Sunlight and a 35% chance Morelull will appear during foggy weather.

As for wanderers, Vileplume, Roserade, and Abomasnow are all in this area. Roserade is a Grass/Poison type, and the evolved version of Roselia. Since the player needs to expose Roselia to a Shiny Stone to make it evolve, getting Roserade in this area may be an easier option.

1 Dappled Grove

Dappled Grove is a southern location in the Wild Area that has some great Grass-type options. Again, Cherubi will not leave the player alone because they can once again spawn in this area by shaking the Berry Trees. Budew and Oddish have a high chance of appearing most of the time. Meanwhile, Snover has a 40% chance of appearing while it is snowing, and Bounsweet has a small chance of being encountered while there is a sandstorm or it's clear.

This location also has some version-specific Pokémon. Seedot, and its Grass/Dark dual-type evolution Nuzleaf, are only available in Pokémon Sword. The dual-type Grass/Dark Pokémon Shiftry is also only available in Pokémon Sword as a wanderer here. But, Vileplume can once again be found here regardless of version.
