Spoilers ahead for Amazing Fantasy #1!
Spider-Man has just been reunited with his beloved Uncle Ben—but with a twist! In Amazing Fantasy #1, on sale now in print and digital, Spider-Man and a handful of other Marvel heroes are whisked off to a mysterious land—and there the Wall Crawler gets a most joyous reunion, but it is clear there is much more going on under the surface.
Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben looms large over his life. Comic fans know that Uncle Ben’s murder by a random thief was the impetus for Spider-Man to fight crime; it was Uncle Ben who first told his nephew that “with great power comes great responsibility,” a mantra that has guided Spider-Man ever since. Uncle Ben has also been one of the very few comic book characters to stay dead, an amazing feat considering death is a revolving door in comics. But now, in Amazing Fantasy #1, it seems Ben has returned from the beyond, with a mission for Spider-Man. The issue is written and illustrated by Kaare Andrews, with letters by Joe Sabino.
In Amazing Fantasy #1, written and illustrated by Kaare Andrews, three Marvel characters from various eras are brought to a mysterious land full of elves and giant monsters. An early career Spider-Man is one of them and finds himself the prisoner of an army of frog men, who are planning to eat him. Salvation arrives when a race of bird-people attacks the frog men, and one of them captures Spider-Man. They take him back to their camp, and a mysterious humanoid woman tells Spider-Man she had orders to bring him back alive. Before Spider-Man can ask what she means, Uncle Ben runs out of a tent and the woman tells Spider-Man Ben has been waiting for him. Spider-Man cannot believe his eyes, and tearfully embraces his uncle. Ben tells his nephew that they are both dead, and now that he is here, everything will be OK and the can “begin.”
The issue ends there, and readers must wait until next month to learn what Uncle Ben means, but for now Spider-Man has been reunited with him. There are no hints of a trap or subterfuge—this seems to be the genuine deal. The obvious question is what does Ben mean by “they are ready to begin?” And how will Spider-Man return to the land of the living? Will he remember this encounter with his Uncle Ben?
It is worth noting that despite Ben’s appearance here, he is still dead, meaning he technically has never returned to life in the comics, keeping his streak alive. Uncle Ben is arguably the most important person in Spider-Man’s life, having set him on the course he still travels. Now the two have been reunited in the next life, even if it is only temporary.
