The CW's The Originals proved to be one of the most successful spin-offs in television history since it made a supernatural universe richer and even more intriguing. It's particularly tricky sustaining an element of mystery and drama for five seasons, each longer than the last. But some minor hiccups aside, The Originals did pretty well.
However, there were some developments that were designed to be twists or as a big reveal and though fans enjoyed the suspense, they would turn out to be quite predictable. Viewers who had watched The Vampire Diaries quickly identified the tropes that The Originals relied on because they would be quite similar to the ones in TVD. And hence, some of the most crucial twists on the show were actually predicted by the fans beforehand.
10 Dahlia Coming After Baby Hope
Once Freya was introduced in the show and her backstory was revealed, it quickly became obvious that her aunt Dahlia was the next potential threat for the Mikalesons. It turned out the Mikaelson matriarch Esther really wanted children and had promised Dahlia the firstborn of each generation if she helped her.
Freya, Esther's firstborn was surrendered but Dahlia got cheated when Esther turned her kids into vampires thus making it impossible for them to have children. But when Klaus finally fathers Hope, and Dahlia came to collect her midway through the second season the viewers weren't shocked at all.
9 Hayley's Death
By the time the final season aired, fans already knew CW was set to produce a spin-off focused on Hope, and judging by The Vampire Diaries franchise's history of killing off main characters, fans had already guessed that Hope's parents will most likely not be a part of the new show. The viewers could guess Hayley would surrender her life to protect Hope, considering the sentimental build-up of the last season.
Plus, Phoebe Tonkin wasn't always listed as part of the main cast in the final season which made it evident that she will not be featured heavily, and neither will she return for the spin-off. So, when Hayley was involved in a gruesome physical tussle with Greta in the sixth episode, it became more and more obvious that Hayley could meet her end then and there.
8 Marcel's Big Reveal About Hayley's Family
Hayley was originally from the bayous of New Orleans and her father was a member of one of the two royal bloodlines of the Crescent wolf pack. Since Marcel had also been in New Orleans for decades now and had established supremacy there, fans had guessed correctly that Marcel must know a lot more about Hayley's origins than he let on.
During the 19th episode of the first season, he tells Hayley that he was the one who had rescued baby Hayley from her crib after her parents died of in-fighting. Marcel was also the one who handed her over to Father Kieran, and though fans hadn't guessed the extent of their connection, the fact that they share a connection was predicted upon heavily.
7 Hayley's Decision To Send Hope Away
Hayley's decision to send baby Hope away from danger was designed as this big, shocking reveal. But viewers had already guessed by the end of season 1 of The Originals that Hope cannot possibly live with the Mikaelsons until things get better. It also made sense that Hayley was propelled to send her daughter away after she found out about her own history, particularly how she lost her parents to a clan war.
She sent Hope away since she didn't want the same fate for her. This was a sensitive arc and fans had guessed sending Hope away to safety was a feasible way ending to season 1, as the Mikaelsons dealt with their enemies.
6 Davina And Mikael Teaming Up
Davina's arc in The Originals season 1 was quite complex; she was just a teenager and was figuring out her powers, but she would often get carried away with vengeance. When she started having visions of Mikael and he appears in her dream as well, viewers had guessed that they would join forces considering they both had issues against the Mikaelsons, particularly Klaus.
But Davina herself was one of the most powerful witches on the show and predictably was not influenced by Mikael, but instead used Mikael as a weapon against Klaus. And audiences had already guessed that an altercation between them would not be smooth, considering Davina does not follow orders.
5 Hayley's Temporary Death
No one expected Hope's birth to be a peaceful one and it became really obvious that the showdown was going to occur as and when Hayley is about to give birth considering how precious Hope was as a tribrid and was the biggest weakness for the Mikaelsons. Right after she was born, her mother Hayley's throat was slit by the witches and Hayley came back to life soon after (since she had Hope's blood in her system).
The twists were quite well-crafted but the show had been building momentum, specifically surrounding Hayley and Hope and fans knew that Hayley would possibly be fatally wounded but won't stay dead considering she had become a fan favorite by then.
4 The Witches' Plan Of Sacrificing Hope
The fact that the witches would want to kill Hope was very predictable because killing Hope would be the ultimate revenge against the Mikaelsons. The witches had been oppressed by Marcel and then Klaus and would, of course, take the opportunity to strike a major blow against the family.
So, when they did manage to kill Hayley and steal Hope and attempted to sacrifice her, it was the least surprising thing to have happened.
3 When Rebekah Decided To Take The Cure
Considering the originals were leaning towards redemption, it makes total sense that Rebekah would move away from her vampiric existence as her brothers surrendered their lives to save Hope.
It syncs with the show's ideals, especially since Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah are the most controversial originals (a great indication is presented in the very first episode of The Originals) and have the bloodiest histories. The Originals explored how Rebekah wanted to redeem herself, so her decision to choose humanity was the most obvious fate for her.
2 When Vincent Agreed To Be The Surrogate For Freya's Child
When Freya and Keelin proposed that Vincent be the surrogate father to their child, it presented the most fitting ending to Vincent's arc. His character had been through a lot but he had always proved to be a loyal ally. The only way for him to be a part of the Mikaelson family as if he was to co-parent Freya and Keelin's child.
Vincent declines the offer at first and he appears at the end of the series finale and agreed to be the surrogate, but it was hardly a twist or even a surprise. Fans had already guessed Vincent would agree the moment it was proposed because otherwise it most likely wouldn't have been brought up.
1 Klaus and Elijah's Deaths
Though the audiences expressed disappointment at the deaths of two of the biggest fan favorites in The Originals, Klaus and Elijah's deaths were perhaps the most predictable ending to their individual arcs. They both aspired for redemption, and the fact that they'd surrender their lives to protect their heir and thus break the toxic cycle of dysfunction in their family had been predicted by fans over the years.
The viewers' outrage was driven by the sense of tragedy since Klaus especially had only begun to appreciate the true meaning of family.
