When it comes to ships, The Vampire Diaries likes to test the waters. No matter how absurd they have the potential to be, fandoms like to throw all manner of romantic pairings together. In a way, it feels as though The Vampire Diaries was one giant experiment to see which characters had the most chemistry.
Given how liberal the show is with its couples, it's shocking how many fan-favorite relationships were never given a real shot. Fan fiction is the perfect outlet for canon divergence, but many of the unexplored romances should have played out onscreen.
10 Rebekah And Elena
For the most part, Rebekah and Elena had an antagonistic relationship. After Elena turned off her emotions, her motives aligned with Rebekah's and they became allies. They were a lot more similar than they realized, and they both valued family above all else.
The only real reason they were at odds was that Rebekah's family put Elena's life at risk. It's not surprising that fans were drawn to them and their complexity. However, it is unfortunate that Elena's love triangle with the Salvatores kept the writers from further exploring her romantic potential.
9 Elena, Caroline, And Bonnie
Elena, Caroline, and Bonnie are the best trio in The Vampire Diaries. While Elena's love for Damon and Stefan had a tendency to flip fop depending on the season, her love for Bonnie and Caroline was never once thrown into question.
Caroline often found herself unsure of her love interests as well, but she never doubted Bonnie and Elena. All three of them need each other to be complete, and their romance would be likely to succeed due to its strong foundation.
8 Damon And Alaric
Given the hostile start to their relationship, it's shocking that Alaric and Damon became as close as they did. Alaric had come to Mystic Falls to take revenge on the vampire who murdered his wife, so it came as a bit of a shock that he became his best friend, instead.
This shocking turn of events is what makes the idea of a romance between them so appealing. The "in love with the mark" trope could've been well-utilized, and an enemies to lovers relationship isn't unusual for The Vampire Diaries to explore.
7 Bonnie And Kai
Given how horrible he was in the prison world, Kai could easily be considered the worst of Bonnie's love interests in The Vampire Diaries. Nothing ever happened between them, and Kai's flirting was more of a tactic to antagonize her, but after merging with his brother he developed genuine emotions.
No matter how villainous Kai was in the beginning, putting him with Bonnie would have made perfect sense given how similar they are to the show's most popular couples. Fans love character development, and Kai could have easily had an arc similar to Damon or Klaus.
6 Klaus And Stefan
Klaus, Stefan, and Caroline was one of the most controversial love triangles in The Vampire Diaries. Fans had strong opinions on whether Klaroline or Steroline was the better ship, but there were others who thought the real chemistry was between Klaus and Stefan.
Klaus and Stefan have an endless amount of tropes the show could've played with, including memory loss. The two always acted like a married couple, so out of all the pairs on this list, a romance between them would've been the least surprising.
5 Katherine And Caroline
Katherine and Caroline are like the light and dark versions of each other. If they both had the same morals, there's no doubt that the two would get along well. Katherine uses emotion as a means of destruction, while Caroline uses it as a means to grow.
Both women are fan-favorite characters, and it's disappointing that their scenes together were few and far between. However, it's easy to see why viewers believe the good vs. evil dynamic would translate into a vehement romance.
4 Jeremy And Tyler
It came as a bit of a surprise that so many fans wanted to see Jeremy and Tyler together, but it becomes much clearer after looking back on the first half of The Vampire Diaries. Tyler's treatment of Vicki made him Jeremy's arch-nemesis, but both characters were impacted by her death.
They developed a frenemy-type relationship, and the animosity between them began to fade the more time they spent together. A romance between them could've easily formed if the show had allowed them to lean on each other more heavily. Jeremy and Bonnie were a relatively neutral couple, and Jeremy and Tyler would've been much more exciting.
3 Elena And Elijah
It's easy to forget given the circumstances, but Elena and Elijah shared a kiss in The Vampire Diaries season 4. It might have been a case of mistaken identity, but the lip-lock caught fans off guard. Some thought it was cringe-worthy, while it made others consider Elena and Elijah as a potential couple.
Elijah was the only person in the Mikaelson family who showed genuine compassion towards Elena, and he came to value the integrity of her character. Once again, the Elena-Stefan-Damon love triangle likely kept the writers from expanding on what they had built.
2 Caroline And Rebekah
Caroline and Rebekah were destined to either love or hate each other. If they weren't on two separate sides of a supernatural fight, they might have become the best duo in The Vampire Diaries. There's no doubt that they have insane chemistry, and there are pros and cons to a romance between them.
Both women have such big personalities that clashing is inevitable. But there's also the possibility that their shared traits and interests would make them each other's perfect match. Either way, fans were right to want this relationship to play out.
1 Damon and Bonnie
There was a time when it seemed as though a romance between Bonnie and Damon could actually happen. Elena left the series around the time they began to grow close, and she gave Damon permission to keep living his life while she was gone.
It was also impossible for the relationships to overlap since Bonnie and Elena couldn't both be alive at the same time. There are scenes that prove Damon and Bonnie were soulmates in The Vampire Diaries and their chemistry was undeniable. Viewers had to take to fan fiction, as well as the book series, to explore this romance after the show kept things platonic.
