Marvel's What If...? is launching on Disney+ and will showcase a huge array of characters from throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the realities that are being explored will vary greatly from what fans have come to know, that doesn't mean the characters themselves aren't familiar.
Thanks to the trailers and previews, a number of well-known villains and some new big bads have been teased for the show. Alongside this though, there are rumors and plenty of fan theories as to who else could show up. There are still some major threats out there that haven't been mentioned but fans hope will make an appearance.
10 Confirmed: Ultron
Ultron's mission very quickly died, despite it being the age of the android. His hopes to rid the Earth of humanity and create a new world were crushed by his very own Vision. Marvel's What If...? shows that the character actually succeeded in his quest though and gained more power than the Avengers could imagine.
In a turn that comic book fans will recognize, not only does Ultron come out victorious against Earth's heroes, he bonds with Vision and even gains access to the Infinity Stones. Artwork of the character has demonstrated just how vicious he will be in this new reality.
9 Hope To See: Kang The Conquerer
Kang The Conqueror has made his triumphant debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although initially as He Who Remains. The man that once controlled the time stream may be gone, but his many variants are now out in the Multiverse, ready to restart the chaotic war.
With What If...? exploring this very Multiverse, it wouldn't be too surprising to see some version of the character appear in any of the episodes, to tease the violence that is about to be unleashed. Kang is seemingly the big bad of the next phase and this is another great opportunity to showcase him; perhaps in one of the alternative realities shown in the trailer.
8 Confirmed: Killmonger
Killmonger is one of Marvel's most ideologically driven villains. Although he may have died in the main timeline, that doesn't mean he can't return in an alternate reality. The version of Killmonger in What If...? is therefore a variant that boasts a surprising twist.
Despite usually being depicted as a villain, he's seemingly a hero, saving Tony Stark from his fate of being captured by the 10 Rings. It's a completely different take on the character, but one that fans of the character will certainly appreciate as he earns his redemption.
7 Hope To See: Sylvie
Sylvie has also been a recent major addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A Variant in her own right, fans last saw her at the center of the Multiverse and it was unclear what her next steps would be. The show has already confirmed that Loki himself will appear in some capacity.
With the God of Mischief ready to make his animated debut, it would be fitting to see Sylvie do the same, perhaps jumping between the different realities, looking for a way to reverse what she has done. Alternatively, fans may not see the enchantress until the next series of Loki.
6 Confirmed: Shuma-Gorath
Shuma-Gorath is a well-known villain for comic book fans and has been confirmed thanks to the trailer. The character is a monstrous, squid-like beast, that has magical powers and is known to travel between dimensions. He is a major threat in every way.
The character could be the big bad of the show, the kind of foe that will bring together the variants from across the Multiverse. It could even be that this isn't the end of Shuma-Gorath but perhaps a set-up for his future appearances; maybe even against The Sorcerer Supreme.
5 Hope To See: The Abomination
The Abomination will be back in the MCU fighting against The Master Of Martial Arts, Shang-Chi, but there's always time for the villain to make a small appearance in What If...? as well. To date, there's only been one sighting of this monstrous creature.
Although initially, the design of the character did not reflect the comics, it seems he has since evolved. It might be a good opportunity to bring the villain into animation to show a Multiversal adventure with the original character, to demonstrate his transition into the new look. He has always been an imposing physical threat as well.
4 Confirmed: Zombies
One of the most unique What If...? ideas from the comics sees an alternate universe where Zombies take hold. Some of Marvel's most famous heroes end up zombified and are significant threats to the rest of the universe. The show will be tackling this same narrative.
Characters like Captain America and Iron Man will be zombified in some way, with the last remaining members of the Avengers fighting off against these diseased heroes. It's a twist on all the characters which is sure to make for some entertaining and exciting villains.
3 Hope To See: Red Skull
The Red Skull is one of Marvel's most vital villains; he's iconic in every way and yet has only appeared in a select through MCU projects. As Captain America's nemesis, it feels as if every version of the character should face off against him at one stage or another.
Sam Wilson has fought Hydra but not Red Skull and with the debuting Captain Carter, she may get a chance against the Nazi war criminal. Hydra has been confirmed for the show, as have villains like Arnim Zola, so a Red Skull appearance isn't out of the question.
2 Confirmed: Thanos
The Mad Titan has made a huge impact on the MCU and is the most lethal villain of the Multiverse thus far. He's already meddled with the timeline himself and out there somewhere is an alternative Thanos that may have been successful in his mission.
There are a number of comic book alternative What If...? scenarios and the show will be adapting one of them with Thanos making his animated debut. It appears that he could be in for a heroic turn, which is definitely a rarity for the character but one of the fun concepts that can only be done in this medium.
1 Hope To See: Hela
Hela is one of Marvel's most exciting Asgardians, but unfortunately only made one appearance in the Marvel Universe. She singlehandedly took down most of Asgard, leaving destruction in her wake and even breaking Mjolnir. Fans have come to truly appreciate the role the character has played.
A return to Hela may be intriguing, especially to see how she will interact with Asgard in an alternative reality. It's easy to create a Variant that wasn't shunned by society and it would even be interesting to see the character as the rightful Queen of Asgard.
