Animal Crossing Player's In-Game Proposal Takes a Sad Turn

An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player has given a look at the darker side of in-game wedding proposals, sharing a screenshot of their character looking upset after supposedly being turned down for marriage. Video game proposals have become more and more common in recent years, but even an adorable Animal Crossing restaurant proposal doesn't guarantee a yes.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched in March 2020 at a time where the global pandemic had put a halt on real-world meet-ups across the globe. The game quickly became a good way for friends and family to stay in touch, with the Nintendo game's multiplayer offering more personality than a Zoom call, without the pressure of needing to be an experienced gamer. With people able to meet up on each others' islands, swap items, and chat, the title has helped many players connect since its launch. Lots of AC players went viral online after sharing successful in-game marriage proposals and even Animal Crossing weddings, performed in the game to better adhere to social distancing guidelines.

While lots of Animal Crossing proposals have been a success, Reddit user fillishave caused a stir on the Animal Crossing subreddit after sharing an in-game screenshot of their failed attempt. Their AC character is shown sitting at a restaurant table with an engagement ring by their side. With a distraught look on their face and the caption "She said no...", Animal Crossing fans have been both amused and saddened by the image. Fortunately, the OP confirmed in a comment that their screenshot was simply them having fun in Animal Crossing, and they weren't in fact turned down in real life. Following comments from concerned players, the Redditor said: "Just to make it perfectly clear: this is not me. Well it's me writing and posting obviously but I neither proposed nor got rejected to and by a real person."

Animal Crossing provides lots of ways for creative players to make their own stories and scenes, whether happy or sad. From movie stills recreated in Animal Crossing to full short films, the game offers lots of creative freedom thanks to its many design tools and decorative items. The game even has its own wedding event, where fans can visit Harv's Island to snap photos for a lucky bride and groom. Taking the best photo rewards players with wedding-themed items. Sadly Wedding Season has now passed, with the in-game event running from June 1 - June 30.

Wedding Season is one of many seasonal Animal Crossing events that fans can take part in. The game is a real-time experience, meaning the seasons will change as they do in real life. The next big scheduled event for Animal Crossing is Halloween, which should see the return of Jack and a range of new Halloween items. Nintendo hasn't yet revealed full details on the event, though it's hoped that more recipes and seasonal goodies will be announced for the event in the coming weeks.
