Arrowverse: 10 Of The Worst Reasons Couples Broke Up

The Arrowverse has seen so many couples over the years, but not all of them lasted. Of course, there have been some deeply emotional reasons why these couples came to an end, whether it's a difference of opinion about having children or sometimes because of a sudden death.

Yet for every complex and personal reason why a couple ended things (or had things ended for them), there have also been completely terrible reasons for breakups that could have been avoided. It might be because of the sci-fi storytelling of this DC Comics universe, or perhaps because a character had to be moved along as quickly as possible, but these couples probably could have given it another go.

10 Brainy And Nia

Brainiac and Nia were a blossoming couple throughout Supergirl and indeed the duo eventually would return to each other. Their initial breakup was something of a head-scratcher though, because it appeared they didn't really give it a go despite caring for each other.

They were a great match, but Brainiac's inexperience and lack of human emotion led to him annoying Nia on a number of occasions. The show opened up the idea that the two could grow together, but it seemed the first hurdle was a little too much, and they split in one of Supergirl's most heartbreaking separations.

9 Wally And Jesse

Wally West and Jesse Quick began a great romance as the two speedsters really got to know one another despite their separate Earths. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until Jesse broke up with Wally from a different dimension.

While Wally has since recovered and has carried on his path of trying to become the best Flash, the breakup still confuses fans today. Jesse Quick has barely been featured in the show since, so it was clearly a way to write the character out rather than attempting to form a coherent narrative around their relationship.

8 Kara And Mon-El

Once again, the end of a relationship here was largely down to the actor leaving the show rather than the writers going in a narrative direction that made sense. Mon-El was the love of Supergirl's life, with the two coming from very different backgrounds but ultimately finding a romance with one another.

When the Daxamites attacked Earth though, Supergirl had no choice but to fill the air with lead to push them away. This too forced Mon-El to leave, but there were infinite other ways that this could have been reversed. Indeed, Mon-El eventually returns with no problems with the atmosphere but had since remarried. There was definitely another way to reunite this loving couple.

7 Caitlin And Julian

Caitlin and Julian were pretty well matched for one another. Both had alternative lives as villains with Julian masquerading against his will as Doctor Alchemy and Caitlin Snow struggling with her alter-ego Killer Frost. They were both hyper-intelligent too and shared a love for knowledge.

Their break-up came about abruptly though. Although Julian couldn't deal with Caitlin experimenting on herself, they would mend their differences only for Caitlin to want to find herself and Julian to leave the city respectively. It was once again a way to write out an actor but there was never any closure with the couple, with the reason being that they simply were no longer an item.

6 Ray And Kendra

Ray and Kendra were never soulmates but their relationship really worked. Unfortunately, despite the love that Kendra did have for Ray she seemed to ignore it time and time again just because fate told her that she had to couple up with her life-long partner Hawkman.

Kendra and Carter didn't work together at all, despite their reincarnations constantly falling in love. Despite this, Kendra still decided to leave Ray even though her heart told her something very different. It was a strange move considering the lack of chemistry and the characters would quickly depart the Waverider. Ray got his happy ending with Nora in one of the most successful Legends of Tomorrow relationships though.

5 Julia And Sophie

Julia and Sophie enjoyed an on and off again relationship throughout BatwomanWhile Sophie tried to come to terms with her newfound emotions after divorcing her husband, Sophie was consistently off track thanks to a variety of dangerous missions.

The relationship was never given full focus and it was never fully clear whether they were together or not, especially as Sophie still loved Kate Kane. The relationship would resolutely come to an end after Sophie was brainwashed of all things by Nygma; she would leave town permanently thus also leaving the show.

4 Nate And Zari

Nate and Zari were the almost couple of Legends Of Tomorrow and fans were thrilled to finally see them together. It really wouldn't last though as time-shifted and Zari was pulled into the Totem, supposedly never able to return to the real world again.

The two essentially broke up, despite the fact that bigger problems have been overcome before. At some stage, the group realizes that Nate might be able to go into the Totem himself, but regardless this main breakup seemed like a convenient plot point to move the characters along to the next narrative.

3 Patty And Barry

The Flash is now in a wholesome family with Iris West and his kids, but before this unit was formed Barry actually briefly dated Patty. The two had a lot in common but really didn't last too long, thanks in large part to Patty having to leave the show.

Strangely enough, Patty worked out Barry's secret, but when he wouldn't admit it to her (to protect her from harm) she dumped him, suggesting that she couldn't find trust in the relationship. It's an issue that could have been talked through further and resolved, but Patty left the city and never came back.

2 Susan And Oliver

Susan was perhaps one of the least likable characters in the Arrowverse. She was a reporter but didn't have any notable arcs of note, asides from her relationship with Oliver. However, the couple really went nowhere and it was clear to see that there was very little chemistry.

As the villain Prometheus began to take a hold of Oliver's life and even kidnapped Susan at one stage, Oliver decided to end the relationship with an age-old excuse; that it was to protect her. The duo came to an end just like that without much of a fight, although Susan got her revenge by giving Oliver's picture to the Russians.

1 Paul And Curtis

Paul and Curtis were really working as a couple and eventually got married. As Curtis's life became more complex, though, Paul began to pull away. This was completely understandable, and Paul took great issue in Curtis being put in the way of danger.

After Curtis ended up in hospital because of his alter-ego, Paul told him he had to choose between his husband and his job. But he left just 24 hours later without actually giving Curtis a choice at all. It was a strange twist and one that did a disservice to everything they had previously built.
