Classic Spider-Man Games Get PS5 Remaster Box Arts From Graphic Designer

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 officially on the horizon, one talented graphic designer is imagining what past Spidey titles like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge Of Time would look like remastered on the PlayStation 5 with a pair of cool box art mock-ups. Years before Insomniac redefined Marvel's favorite web-slinger with the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time developer Beenox rebooted the franchise with a duology of reasonably-received superhero adventures during the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 generation.

Just as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could focus on multiple playable characters like Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and possibly Harry Osborn's Venom, Shattered Dimensions and Edge Of Time put the spotlight on some of the many different iterations of the wall-crawling warrior as they banded together across multiple timelines and various gameplay styles. 2010’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions saw the traditional 616 “Amazing” Spider-Man, the 2000’s-era Ultimate Spider-Man (who in this version wore the symbiotic Black Suit commonly associated with Venom), the Great Depression-era Spider-Man Noir, and the futuristic Spider-Man 2099 collaborate across realities to stop Mysterio from taking over the multiverse. The 2011 follow-up, Spider-Man: Edge Of Time, scaled the roster of Spider-Men back to just Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 but featured timeline-switching gameplay that allowed players to alter the path for one of the heroes through the other's actions as they worked to prevent the death of Peter Parker. Both games were fairly memorable among Spider-fans, but they haven't seen an official rerelease since 2014, when Activision lost its ownership of the Spider-Man license.

As reported by Game Rant, The Escapist graphic designer Rock Rider recently posted mock-ups of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge Of Time box art for the PlayStation 5 on Twitter. These fan-rendered covers imagine what the games would look like if Insomniac remastered them for the current console generation, featuring re-rendered versions of the four main Spideys in the case of Shattered Dimensions and a battle-worn Amazing Spider-Man with a reflection of Spider-Man 2099 in his eye for Edge Of Time. The Shattered Dimensions art had to use a replacement for the final Spider-Man's symbiote suit, but otherwise it all looks quite accurate.

While Insomniac didn’t develop the original versions of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions or Spider-Man: Edge Of Time, one of the prolific PlayStation studio’s most recent titles shares some themes and gameplay with these two dimension-hopping superhero escapades. Just this year, Insomniac released Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which featured an alternate reality version of the titular duo that joined forces with their prime counterparts to defeat a multiversal threat - just like the heroes of Beenox’s first two Spider-Man outings. Rift Apart received high praise from fans and critics alike due to its dimension-warping Rift gameplay, which allowed players to seamlessly transition through portals to other parts of a given level - something that isn’t that far removed from Edge Of Time constantly switching between the two Spideys without as much as a loading screen.

Given how familiar Insomniac is with the type of trans-dimensional gameplay Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Edge Of Time employed and with not one but two interlocking Marvel games in the works, it would certainly be interesting to see the developer bring back some of the games that arguably helped make its own take on Spider-Man possible in an updated remaster. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is currently set to launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive sometime in 2023.
