Daniel Craig Has Regrets Over Past James Bond Comments

Daniel Craig regrets the way he once described his feelings toward playing James Bond again, admitting he could've phrased it better. Following Pierce Brosnan's time as the iconic British spy, Craig became the sixth actor to play James Bond on the big screen. His initial casting was met with some blowback from fans, but his first outing in 2006's Casino Royale saw many of them changing their tunes. Craig has since played Bond in four movies, with the fifth scheduled to arrive in just a couple of weeks. The long-awaited No Time to Die will also serve as Craig's last performance as Bond.

Though the lead-up to No Time to Die has been all about giving Craig a proper send-off, few can forget how he responded to the idea of playing James Bond in a fifth movie. While promoting the previous film, Spectre, in 2015, the actor declared that he would rather "slash my wrists" than play Bond again. Fans were stunned by Craig's words and thought that Spectre would be his final performance in the franchise. However, he later came back for No Time to Die and, as he recently explained, has some regrets about what he said before.

Speaking to Radio Times (via The Independent), Craig reflected on his post-Spectre comments and explained what he was honestly thinking. During Spectre's production, he suffered a difficult injury and by the end of filming felt utterly drained. That fueled his comments. "To be completely honest, I was thinking, ‘I don’t know if I can do another one of these.’ I finished filming Spectre with a broken leg," Craig said. This led him to do some thinking. He said, "To your point about being in my fifties now, I thought, ‘Do I have this in me? Do I want to go through all of this?’ I needed a break." Craig than admitted that, in trying to convey that, he should have phrased things differently. "A little more skill in the answer might have been better. I was joking but it came across as ungrateful," he confessed.

Craig's past words might give the impression he hasn't enjoyed his time playing James Bond, but that does not appear to be the case. In a recent video from the No Time to Die set, Craig gave an emotional wrap speech wherein he even seemed to address the poor things he had said. Fortunately, they're in the past now, and he can give the James Bond franchise a kinder, more suitable goodbye. No Time to Die's many delays have made it difficult for him to move on, but with the movie only 2 weeks away, it's almost time.

No one can say Craig's time as James Bond has been easy, but he's certainly made the role his own. Many are now eager to see who will be the next person to take on the 007 moniker, though the Bond producers have remained tight-lipped about whoever they are considering. Craig recently commented on the matter and explained why he feels James Bond shouldn't be a woman, like some have called for. He believes women deserve better original roles, which isn't a terrible thing to consider. After all this time and all he's been through, Craig certainly knows the ins and outs of this character.
