Darkseid is More Terrifying Than Ever in Bill Sienkiewicz Art

Comic book fans know that Darkseid is one of DC’s most horrifying villains, and the Lord of Apokolips is never more terrifying than in an amazing new piece from superstar artist Bill Sienkiewicz. The illustrator, best known for his work on New Mutants as well as some of the most striking covers in the industry, imbues Darkseid with an aura of pure evil in an image shared on social media.

Bill Sienkiewicz is a legend in the comics industry. Breaking into the business at the age of 19, his first published works were at Marvel Comics, illustrating Moon Knight as well as the black and white Hulk magazine. Starting with issue 18, Sienkiewicz took over as regular penciler for New Mutants, along with illustrating the covers. Around this time, Sienkiewicz’s art style evolved, becoming more expressionistic; he also began experimenting with various styles, bringing together collages, painting, and mixed media into a dynamic style. Thanks to the strength of his New Mutants work, along with a series of unforgettable covers, Sienkiewicz became one of comics’ most sought-after artists. In addition to his Marvel output, he has worked extensively with DC Comics as well, providing interiors and covers for Batman and others. He has branched out into other media as well, including card games such as Magic the Gathering as well as animation; he was nominated for an Emmy twice for his work on the cartoon Where on Earth is Carmen San Diego?

Sienkiewicz also maintains an active social media presence and took to Twitter to unveil his new image of Darkseid. The image, which Sienkiewicz identified as a painting, shows the Lord of Apokolips staring angrily at something (or someone) off-panel; it is not difficult to imagine an Omega Beam in someone’s future. Fans have responded to this striking image, garnering close to 1,600 likes and over 150 retweets.

When the legendary Jack Kirby created Darkseid at the beginning of the 1970s, he created the ultimate personification of evil in the DC Universe. Darkseid and the Fourth World Saga that sprung up around him has captivated the imaginations of generations of writers and artists, Sienkiewicz among them. Darkseid is a character that can bring out the best in a creator, and Bill Sienkiewicz proves that here with his new painting of Darkseid. Kirby imagined Darkseid as cold and uncaring, obsessed with the Anti-Life Equation, and Sienkiewicz captures it here.

Though many of DC's artists have tried their hand at making the Lord of Apokolips an imposing figure, few have been able to capture the sheer burning hatred in his eyes like Sienkiewicz. Darksied is perhaps DC’s ultimate villain and Bill Sienkiewicz captures him in all his terrifying glory in a stunning new painting.
