Netflix shares a new video for Dawson's Creek revealing the original theme song by Paula Cole has been restored on the streaming platform. Created by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, the teen drama explores the lives of a close-knit group of high school friends in Capeside, Massachusetts. The main cast for the series included James Van Der Beek as the titular character, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, Mary-Margaret Humes, John Wesley Shipp, Mary Beth Peil and Nina Repeta.
First premiering in January 1998, Dawson's Creek received generally positive reviews from critics across its six-season run and delivered solid ratings for the WB Network and going out with its largest audience ever with its series finale. The series has been credited with launching the acting careers of its central cast and cited by many as one of the epitome shows of the late '90s and early aughts. One of the series' most iconic elements came from its soundtrack of independent and alternative rock songs that would influence similar genre titles of the time, though this would also become one of Dawson's Creek's struggles when it came to home media and streaming releases due to Sony Music failing to secure the rights for any of the songs, including Paul Cole's "I Don't Want to Wait" that served as the theme song.

The announcement that Dawson's Creek would be coming to Netflix last year sent a wave of excitement for longtime fans of the series as well as those who had come to fall in love with the numerous Van Der Beek's sad Dawson memes it spawned over the years. However, that excitement was initially hampered when it was confirmed that it would be without Cole's iconic theme song, though the singer's confirmation of signing a new deal with Sony to bring it back certainly brightened those days. The streaming platform's announcement that the song is now playing once again during the opening credits for the series should come as a happy way to close out the Labor Day weekend.
The bigger point of curiosity is whether Sony will look to continue this trend and re-acquire the rights to the various other songs featured throughout Dawson's Creek's run for Netflix. Given the expenses it would require, it does seem unlikely they might go to those lengths, but should the reinstatement of its theme song bring in enough viewers for Netflix, both parties may deem it viable enough to make the effort. In the meantime, fans can kick back and celebrate they no longer have to wait for Cole's track to grace the opening credits on Netflix now.
