Warning: This article contains spoilers for Deathloop.
A full analysis of Deathloop's lore reveals a surprisingly in-depth connection to Arkane Studios' beloved Dishonored franchise. The recently-released mind-bending shooter puts players in the boots of Colt, a man who must assassinate eight key targets in order to escape an endless time loop. Fans were quick to compare Arkane's newest title to its most popular franchise, with Deathloop's gameplay mirroring Dishonored mechanics in more than a few ways.
Both Deathloop and Dishonored put an emphasis on assassination, with players hunting down and eliminating a colorful cast of dastardly antagonists. In order to aid players on this cutthroat journey, Arkane Studios fills its game worlds with a variety of unique tools to overcome an array of challenges. This "immersive sim" philosophy permeates all of Arkane's games, including 2017's Prey, but Deathloop and the Dishonored games in particular put an emphasis on creative violence. Supernatural powers and deadly weapons round out the protagonists' arsenals, with many of Deathloop's powers directly mirroring Dishonored abilities. Short-range teleportation, linking the fates of enemies, and disguising as non-player characters serve to make the two title feel very similar despite Deathloop's addition of first-person shooter combat.
Even more than shared developers and mechanics, Reddit user aaqd contends that Deathloop and Dishonored actually share a setting. The in-depth lore analysis combines evidence found within Deathloop with leaked pre-release materials, revealing that the time loop shooter is set in the future of the Dishonored world. These in-game Deathloop details include a pair of "Antique Dueling Pistols" which are clearly the same weapons used by protagonists and guards in Dishonored. A leaked presentation from Arkane Studios goes deeper by detailing that Deathloop's island of Blackreef is located near the island of Tyvia, a setting which is frequently discussed but never visited in the Dishonored games.
Back in 2018 Arkane Studios revealed that the Dishonored franchise was taking a break, with the studio's two teams moving on to develop Deathloop and the upcoming vampire shooter Redfall. This announcement left fans disappointed, as only a fraction of Dishonored's massive and highly detailed universe has been explored in-game, but Dishonored 2 lead designer Ricardo Bare expressed that future installments could still materialize in the future. With the revelation that, allegedly, Deathloop actually does take place within the future of that stealth action series, maybe doors have been opened for fans of the gloomy steampunk franchise.
While Arkane Studios is known for including Easter eggs of its past works in new titles, aaqd's thorough presentation goes a long way toward confirming that Deathloop is a hidden sequel to the Dishonored franchise. With that series supposedly on hold, this brings up many questions about how Arkane will continue to push the universe forward. Whether the story continues in Dishonored 3, Deathloop 2 or even a third series within the setting, fans can probably look forward to more supernatural assassin simulators from Arkane in the future.
Deathloop is available on PS5 and PC.
