Deathloop: How to Unlock Multiplayer Invasions | Screen Rant

Deathloop is the newest release from Arkane Studios, developers of the beloved Dishonored series. In it, players take the role of Colt, an assassin who's trapped in a timeloop on a private island with little memory of his previous life. The goal is to unravel the mystery of this island, Blackreef, and to kill its founders, the visionaries. The catch is that players will have to deal with Julianna, another assassin who drops in from time to time to kill Colt and prevent him from breaking the time loop.

Deathloop offers a single-player invasion mode where Julianna is simply an AI character, but she doesn't have to be just an AI. Players can choose to control Julianna instead of Colt, dropping into other player's games in a similar fashion to Dark Souls-style multiplayer invasions. This introduces a whole new layer of unpredictability into the flow of the game, since a player-controlled Julianna can be a lot more threatening and creative than the computer-controlled Julianna.

When players first boot up Deathloop, they'll only be able to play as Colt. After unlocking Julianna, players can choose between online play, which allows any random player to drop in, or the "friends only" setting, which is best if they want to play with a specific person. Note that Deathloop doesn't support cross-play, so PC players can only play with other PC players, and PS5 players with other PS5 players.

At first, only "Break the Loop" is available on the main menu. To unlock Julianna, players will need to complete the two introductory story missions of Deathloop, "The Longest Day" and "Ubiquity". The former will explain how the timeloop works and how to play the game, and the latter unlocks the Infusion mechanic, enabling players to carry over items from day to day. Afterward, the "Protect the Loop" mode should be available from the main menu.

Selecting "Protect the Loop" will put players in the role of Julianna, whose mission is to seek and kill Colt to prevent him from breaking the loop. When playing as Julianna, Deathloop gives players the option to either invade a random player's loop or to invade a friend's loop. Since Julianna is Blackreef's head of security, she also has access to a different set of weapons and gear than Colt, including some more powerful weaponry right from the start.

Playing as Julianna will also unlock a range of alternate outfits that players can equip for both her and Colt. Successfully killing Colt during invasions will gradually level up Julianna's Hunter rank, unlocking outfits that can be equipped from the "Loadout" menu on Deathloop's main menu screen. This is the game's only way to get additional outfits, but players hardly need the additional motivation to get out there and disrupt Colt's mission with some skillful counter-play.
