God Of War Ragnarok Fan Art Imagines Blade Of Olympus In The New Game

In anticipation of the upcoming game God of War: Ragnarok, a fan has posted art depicting Kratos wielding the Blade of Olympus in the Norse realm. A recent God of War: Ragnarok trailer has fans excited for the release, and some are looking back to the Spartan's Greek history for clues to what might happen in the next stage of his journey. While the 2018 God of War was largely standalone, it did feature references to the events of the original trilogy, and it stands to reason that the connection may continue with Ragnarok, since the iconic Kratos remains the protagonist.

The original three God of War games all took place in the Greek lands. In each release, Kratos killed his way through the pantheon of Greek gods using a variety of abilities and weapons. The Blade of Olympus was featured heavily in God of War 2, where it was used by Zeus to stab Kratos in the abdomen — leaving the enormous scar that can be seen in the 2018 release — and later by Kratos himself when he killed Athena. The Blade played an important part in the original trilogy, leading some fans to hope that it may make a reappearance in the upcoming game.

Twitter user BT_BlackThunder posted an image of Kratos holding the Blade of Olympus in a desolate Norse landscape, surrounded by the bodies of his fallen foes. With the release of God of War: Ragnarok coming closer, fans have been speculating as to what might happen, and the Blade would not be the first feature to return in Ragnarok, which will already see Kratos wielding his iconic Blades of Chaos, a franchise staple that was also present in the 2018 reboot.

If the Blade was brought back in Ragnarok, it would also have implications for the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, his son. Kratos' hesitance to reveal his past caused a great deal of tension between the two in the 2018 God of War, and the reappearance of the Blade of Olympus would be sure to invite questions that the Spartan would not want to answer. While Kratos and Atreus were on good terms at the end of the previous game, making Atreus angry could have dire consequences in Ragnarok.

The 2018 God of War saw Kratos make use of only a few weapons, mostly his Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. God of War: Ragnarok could bring in more weapons for the Spartan to use, but judging by the precedent set by the first game, it is likely that they will need to be relevant to the game's story to justify their inclusion. The Blade of Olympus is probably the most significant weapon from the original trilogy, and its appearance would have the biggest impact on Kratos and Atreus as they continue their journey. But whether or not the Blade is brought into the finished game, it's clear that the anticipation of the upcoming release has fans theorizing over every possibility.
