How Powerful Ultron Would Be With The Infinity Stones Compared To Thanos

Warning: SPOILERS for Marvel's What If...? episode 7, "What If... Thor Were An Only Child?"

What If...? episode 7 features the surprising arrival of Ultron, who inexplicably wields all six Infinity Stones in Party Thor's timeline — here's how powerful that makes him in comparison to their original owner in the main MCU universe. Thanos' quest to collect the Infinity Stones is what drove the main conflict of all the Infinity Saga. In the end, the Mad Titan achieved his purpose, briefly turning into the most powerful being in the universe. However, the Infinity Stones take a toll on anybody that wields them, and Thanos was too weak to survive the Avengers' counterattack at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.

The collective power of all six Infinity Stones also destroyed one of Smart Hulk's arms permanently and killed Tony Stark almost immediately. It seems that, in order to affect the whole universe, the Stones need an incredible amount of power that not even the strongest MCU characters are able to withstand. However, each individual Infinity Stone can be extremely powerful by itself. For instance, it only took Thanos a small hand movement to obliterate Thor's Asgardian ship with the Power Stone.

That's what makes Ultron's appearance in What If...? episode 7 so frightening. While Thanos collected the Infinity Stones in order to fulfill his quest to wipe out half of all life in the universe, Ultron is motivated by his desire to drive humanity to complete extinction. The genocidal robot isn't restrained by misguided philanthropy. He doesn't need to use all six Infinity Stones at the same time when he can use each of them strategically to wreak havoc across the universe. And even if he does attempt to perform something similar to Thanos' Snap, he can assign one of his many drones to do it and then discard its charred remains.

Curiously, Tony Stark may have had nothing to do with Ultron's appearance in Party Thor's universe given that, without Loki's invasion to gather the Avengers together, Stark doesn't get the idea to build an AI system to protect the world. What If...? episode 7 doesn't explain exactly where this Ultron comes from or what his motivations are, but without the Avengers there to stop him, Ultron can be much more dangerous than Thanos ever wished to be. It's important to remember that the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, although divided, gave their best efforts to stop Thanos in Avenegers: Infinity War, and Thanos was only able to perform the Snap shortly after collecting the last Infinity Stone, the Mind Stone. Even then, he did it with Stormbreaker lodged in his chest, with the Black Order already dead, and with his army of Outriders completely decimated.

On the contrary, the Ultron that appears in What If...? episode 7 already possesses all six Infinity Stones, presumably without having to deal with any major obstacles beforehand. Without the Infinity Stones, Thanos is physically stronger than Ultron. However, Ultron is more ruthless and has the ability to transfer his mind to any of his other bodies. Ultron might not want to damage his Vision husk, but he can have the universe at his feet whenever he wants now.
