Where is Sex Education actually filmed and is Moordale Secondary a real school? The series recently entered its third season on Netflix and the character dynamics and hijinks were just as strong as ever. Besides the character relationships, Moordale Secondary School has become just as integral to Sex Education, with the season 3 finale seeing the educational facility shutting its doors after developers pulled their financial support.
While Moordale very much feels like a real school, it isn’t. This is not shocking as most television shows don’t use the names of actual high schools for their fictional worlds. The scenes that are set in Sex Education’s fictitious Moordale, which comes alive through a combination of American and UK school traits, are filmed at the Caerleon campus in Newport, Wales. The campus was once a part of the University of Wales, but it closed down in 2016 and has not been used since. The campus’ disuse makes it easy for the crew of Sex Education to fill it with things that make Moordale standout, including long lines of lockers that are similar to American schools, chairs, flyers and other detailed props that bring Moordale to life.
Moordale being filmed on a university campus explains why the school can seem so vast, yet so small at the same time, with the interiority providing intimacy of student bonding while the exterior gives off a semblance of freedom while maintaining a very community-like feel. The gym — where school dances, assemblies, and other big events happen at Moordale — are filmed at the Paget Rooms in the Welsh town of Penarth. Series creator Laurie Nunn has cited John Hughes films (like The Breakfast Club) as the inspiration for Moordale’s general vibe despite it being a UK school, and it stands out in that regard, with the set dressing being unique to the show despite the campus once belonging to a university.
The rest of the show is filmed in other nearby towns and locations throughout Wales, including the Wye Valley and Symonds Yat East in Herefordshire, England. The latter location is where Otis and Jean Milburn’s house is seen in external shots throughout the series (gorgeously overlooking the Wye river). There is also the Forest of Dean where Adam and Eric go on a picnic in Sex Education season 3, Tintern’s Wireworks Bridge, where the characters are shown crossing it several times on their way to Moordale or other places in town, and Gloucestershire, a South West England county bordering Wales. The series ultimately makes good use of these locations, which mix an old-school vibe with seclusion and modernity, with most of the locations filmed within the county of Monmouthshire in Wales.
At the end of Sex Education season 3, it was revealed Moordale Secondary was closing its doors because the developers pulled their funding after the students rose up against Headteacher Hope Haddon to embrace their reputation as the "sex school." It's therefore possible season 4 won't have any scenes set at the Caerleon campus because of these events, but there is still hope that Moordale will reopen its doors once more in the near future. It's hard to imagine Sex Education without the familiar setting, which has become so ingrained into the series that it's almost like an additional character.
